Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has refuted claims from Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger that he was close to joining Le Professeur in north London 13 years ago.

The story has always been that Arsene wanted to take the Swedish striker on trial from Zlatan’s local club Malmo, however, Ibrahimovic, who would go on to represent the likes of Juventus and Barcelona, wasn’t too fond of the idea of having to prove himself to anyone.

The now-33-year-old doesn’t deny the whole trial story, however, he does suggest that he was never close to joining the Gunners.

“Today, Wenger says it was a misunderstanding,” Ibrahimovic told The Guardian.

“But I didn’t like being asked to prove myself. I know I’m good enough. I don’t need to show it to you. Either you know who I am or you don’t.

“I remember being in Wenger’s office and you could tell he was the boss.

“It was Wenger! But I don’t think I was so close [to signing]. I went to Ajax the next day.”
