His cameo wasn’t even that poor tbh- were people expecting him to come on and score two 30 yarders?

He wasn’t particularly great but that doesn’t mean he was poor. As @razörist pointed out, he had a tap in opportunity had Auba picked him out. You wanna talk about poor cameos, look no further than Aubameyang who I’m still upset with in all honesty.

Agreed with this wholeheartedly. PEA needs to pull his socks up. Long run of kak now...

For years the most of you keep moaning about his workrate and his body language. Now he gets subbed on, tracks back, wins the ball back in several occations, comits fouls, goes shoulder on shoulder with Sissoko and still its an awfull cameo? Ffs

I don't give a **** about what he does defensively tbh as long as he's not a liability on that end and does the minimum required. That's not what he's supposed to excel in for us. The reason I thought his cameo was poor is because of the stuff he did with the ball, and how he struggled to get involved in the play as you'd expect.. His set pieces were really bad too, you'd expect a player of his caliber to deliver better than that.

This in particular stood out to me:

Last minute of the game, we have plenty of people in the box, he has a lot of time, how does he not get that ball in to a dangerous area from there?

Shouldn't this start with Xhaka not putting it into the box?

Also he is played the ball on his weak foot and needs to shift to left. By that time Rose already closed him down for the block.

You know what ? All this crap about him not being physical is overblown . Just remembered hims cynically upending Hazard in a sliding tackle on the touchline  also he was motm v Sp**s last season at home and he was physical then too .

He seemed a bit nervous on Sat but that's maybe because he keeps getting told that he can't play away .

Wow two of the top posters backing me up in one day, in this thread of all places. Feels like Christmas.

People are talking about Aubameyang’s poor cameo quite a lot in the Aubameyang thread to be fair..

Not much to say about Mesut. We know he struggles to impact a game from the bench and he was more anonymous than bad. Hope he can turn up in Rennes.

Yup was really expecting him to pick someone out there really unusual he couldn't beat the first man , have said it after the Bournemouth game but he doesn't look sharp as he was a few months ago Hopefully it won't take long to get back in the swing of things .

Probably slightly harsh to criticize him. Was a bit of a nothing substitution really, he didn't do anything wrong but there was no notable improvement in our performance for him coming on.

I still think Laca would have buried that penalty. I love Auba but that miss was unforgivable. The subs killed the game for me.

For the Özil part: What? Doing nothing to improve the game while being subben on is a reason to criticize someone, especially a supposedly "world class" player. The term "useless sub" describes his performance, and rightly so.

On the second part: Laca would've never gotten the penalty though. Could argue we could've kept him on though and just fkn skip getting özil on. Though at the time i thought özil would actually do something, guess i forgot it wasnt bournemouth. However Laca was having a really bad game missing sitters up to that point so the sub at the tiue was probably the right call. Too bad all our players are chickens and everyone is too scared to take a penalty.

Again, can't understand this 'but he runs games, you can't expect him to make any impact from the bench'. I just can't believe the utter ****ing horseshit I read on here sometimes. I'm not even attacking the total lack of impact he had from the bench. What would be the point at this stage? It's boring. But the sh!t you read when it happens... Had he scored or assisted, you wouldn't have heard the last of it. It's shameless stuff now.

Not expected to lift the players around him
Not expected to track back
Not the talisman type
Not the cake, he's the cherry on top
Not expected to make an impact from the bench

All stuff said by people who advocate his inclusion every week. And you're meant to be pro-Özil? He's turned your brains to ****ing jelly

To be honest mate I can't remember the last time he came on as a sub and made a difference. Was exactly the same in the United game.

Suppose you're right mate! Just shows how far he's fallen when you don't expect anything from him anymore

I'd have kept him on personally. Laca on a bad day is still more likely to find the back of the net than 90% of our squad.

Fair play to Auba for taking that pen, took some balls. We need a specialist penalty taker.

I mean he came on, worked hard to win the ball back, it didn’t really come his way offensively in the late chaos. Could have had a chance for the winner if Auba didn’t bottle the pass for a tap-in. Made a really great run to beat the defense and come into position for a near post finish. Everybody ignores that, that was just Auba’s faillure, instead of another great example what Mesut offers off the ball other than his ability on it. I guess if your objective is to find a stick to beat him with, you will always find something if you really really want to.

No other team has to say this about their top earner on a regular basis though. He's one of the highest paid players in the league yet people with high expectations are being slated for having them..
I love Mesut. He's a class act on his day. But he has like 4 days a season and it really isn't good enough.

If you expect him to turn a game on its head in 20 minutes you just have unrealistic expectations. He did everything he could in those 20 minutes and sadly it didn't give us the win. When there was a challenge, he stepped in, when there was a passing opportunity he tried to take it, when there was an opportunity for a dangerous run he attempted it. He could have had the chance for the winning goal if Auba wasn't having a meltdown.

I can't believe you people. When he's not a passenger, he's hiding. When he's not hiding, he's too soft. When he's not soft, he doesn't win us the game. When he performs in a match, the match isn't big enough. When he performs in a big game, he doesn't do it often enough. Just pick your poison and stick with it for once. Anyway, I'm going to stop attempting to reason with agenda-driven or weak-minded posters on here.
