Vela is worth more than 2.8m.. anyone that scores 12 goals and 7 assists in La Liga should command more than that, especially one as young as Vela. he's talented, he's effective (in Spain) and he's worth at least 5m IMO. (not to mention he speaks Spanish.. heh)

That said, im sure that 2.8m is a starting bid. I would be surprised if we let him go for that little..

Any news on Joel Campbell's work permit?

According to the press in Costa Rica, Joel has played in 14 of the last 35 games with the national squad and this accounts to only 40% of the 75% required as per the FA. Therefore, the only option is to apply again for the "special talent". I sure hope he gets it and then gets sent to a lower table Premier League club like West Ham where he can get regular first team football and gets used to the pace and physicality of the EPL.

Do friendlies count?

Otherwise, no way that Costa Rica has played 35 games in two years.

Competitive matches only. And also, the national team that a player represents must be in the Top 70 of the world. Costa Rica is ranked 65th, luckily.

There's also something on the panel for the "special talent" visa.

well if he's already playing for the national team at this age, I really don't see why he wouldn't qualify for special talent...

lets be honest, you only have to be somewhat capable to break into the Costa Rican national team.

that said, we'll surely try for the permit. whether we get it or not is another story

Other players have got special talent visas in the past for far less accomplishments, e.g. Denilson and also Miyaichi (I believe).

Campbell being a regular starter for Costa Rica should be sufficient for a visa. I don't want to see him be stuck in European loans for 5 years, like Botelho.

jones (Forum Member) on June 22nd, 2012, 3:04 pm

If Miyaichi can get one for playing in the Dutch league then I'm sure Campbell will get one for scoring against Iker Casillas.

how else better can you prove "special talent"? costa rica is top 70 in the world anyways, so it definitely becomes a factor i think.

Costa Rica being in the top 70 is a f*ing joke TBH.. they are ranked higher than teams like Israel, Bulgaria, Morrocco.. and FIFA has Panama in the top 50.. everyone knows the FIFA ranking are a load of sh*t

that said, JC did score 4 goals for Lorient last season, which is OK considering he was not a starter most of the time.

however, to me, a special talent would mean that the player was a real difference maker when he played (i.e. Miyachi at Feyenoord).. sure, he scored against Casillas (in a friendly), but the other goals he's scored for the CRNT has been against teams like Cuba, El Salvador and Guyana.. (another friendly goal against Wales doesnt really mean much either)

im not saying he definitely wont get one, but for those who are comparing the permits received for Denilson (captain of the Brazilian U17 team - and of course, just being Brazilian) and Miyachi (3 goals, 5 assists in 12 games at Feyenoord), Campbell has only done moderately compared to them..

he's got talent, that Im sure of. just a matter of how he progresses (all of this IMO)

It's all a load of bullshit anyway tbh. The guy is earning bucketloads more than the average Brit, yet can't get a work permit.

Weird rule honestly. It's like rejecting tax money.

He scored against Spain. They should have handed him his work permit at the end of that match.

Any news on Wellington da Silva. The chap will be 20 in January. Shouldn't he be about ready to break into our first team squad.

I'm beginning to doubt the wisdom of signing lads and then sending them away to second tier Spanish clubs straight away.

Has it ever actually worked out that one of these guys has done the business for us ?

THunter (Forum Member) on July 1st, 2012, 2:45 pm

He has a **** attitude apparently, I remember reading about him eating pizza at midnight with a game the next day or something.

that was early on at his time with Levante.. i think he got better after that and got a bit of PT at Alcoyano

He is technically up there , but mentally ... a long way to go . You are right sending away they tend to get lost in the system .

The lad has ridiculous ball skills, and I'm not talking in relative terms (young age etc.). Seems he's working on his attitude, but he's badly in need of playing time, and I fear he won't get any in Europe. Not sure about his physique either, if Wenger doesn't pull off a surprise and gets him a work permit, plus a loan to a Championship club or something, then I don't think he'll have a chance here.

Think we need a club like Lorient in Spain, where youngsters can get playing time, and we can even maybe snatch up a talent or two. Would help young players there like Wellington or Botelho to play there together, and the club could loan our fringe players like Park or Squillaci too. Udinese for example already has such a deal with Granada CF.

Confirmed by the press in Costa Rica. He is headed to Real Betis for a year on loan. I think this loan spell in Spain will do wonders for Joel's development.

Arsenal striker Joel Campbell will spend next season on loan at Real Betis.

The Costa Rica international had been looking forward to returning to the Emirates this summer after a season-long stay at Lorient but he is now eagerly awaiting his imminent move to Spain.

"It's a great opportunity for me to grow," Campbell told Fox TV.

"I am going to the world's best league, and I want to play."

Campbell joined Arsenal from Costa Rican outfit Deportivo Saprissa last summer but was loaned to Lorient after failing to secure a work permit.

The 20-year-old striker, who has been capped 14 times by his country, netted three times in 25 appearances in Ligue 1 last season.

Good for him, don't like how he says La Liga is the best though

I fear he gets lost on spanish loans like Wellington (which if playing here Arsène could have fixed his attitude issues) or even Botelho.

How strong Betis is in strikers department?
Will he have strong competition for game time?

They have Ruben Castro who's pretty good but he's getting old, don't know if he can play 90 minutes for 40+ games.

They had Roque Santa Cruz on loan (amazingly still from City, remember that guy?) for the entire season and he started A LOT, even though he played like ****, so Campbell should definetly see some playing time.

Uh-oh, he thinks that La Liga is the worlds best league.
User avatar

mistaT (Trusted Member) on July 4th, 2012, 5:20 am

Think his claim of it being the best league is being blown out of context.

I'd imagine he's just excited by the challenge of a new league/advancement.

I think that was a good piece of diplomacy from Joel and arguably it is that best in the at the moment from a technical stand point .
