Who should be our next captain? (2012 edition)

DontPushMe (Forum Member) on July 4th, 2012, 6:35 pm

So I know most of us are still gutted over RVPs betrayal, but this is an interesting topic. Who gets the armband next? Its becoming as cursed as #9.

If RVP had stuck around for another year or 2, or if Wilshere were fit last year, Wilshere would of likely been the guy.

Vermaelen is the obvious guess but I don't think is quality enough, plus rumors of him flirting with Barca. Definitely has the persona and respect to be the guy though. I'm very worried of giving it to someone whos already got a foot out the door again. The past few have been that way.

Throughout the course of this post I've talked myself into Arteta. I think he could handle it and I don't think he has any interest in leaving the club anytime soon. We need a cool steady guy there that the team doesnt have to question's motives.

My guess:

Captain: Vermaelen
Vice: Song

If it were my pick:

Captain: Arteta
Vice: Koscielny

Darkhorse is Szczesny, certainly has the personality but like Wilshere i dont think hes quite ready yet.

Vermaelen captain, Arteta vice, can't see it being any other way really.

Vermaelen will be given it, until he moves next season like they all do.

Vermaelen

Wilshere (Vice).

Someone who's not gonna leave.

Thomas Vermaelen, Jack should be vice but that will probably go to Rosicky/Arteta/Song etc.

Marouane Chamakh

Arsenal's new number 10.

Can't give it to Jack yet. Better and more established players than him struggled with the added pressure of the armband. To be the saviour of both Arsenal and England after just one full season of top-flight football is too much for a 20 year old.

Has to be Vermaelen really.

I'd be tempted to give it straight to jack

but you dont wanna snub vermaelen, have him have disagreements about our 'direction' and then piss off the city the year after this.....

I would give it straight to Thomas Vermaelen!

Vermaelen. He signed his contract when we were completely ****** and has said he sees no other club for him. Arteta vice captain.

Would hesitate to give it to Vermaelen simply because he could be on the bench next season.

The yearly search!

Vermaelen is most likely, with Wilshere, Song and Arteta all in the mix for vice I'd say.

Sagna, TV, Arteta, Song, JW in that order.

Robin Van Persie.

I will refer you all to exhibit A

RVP is not the first nor will he be the last player to use player power to get his way. I am of the opinion he will stay and we will sign some more top players this summer.
Then again I have smoked a fair bit today

If Wenger can chance RVP's mind like Ferguson did Rooney I will be ecstatic.

DiamondGooner (Forum Member) on July 4th, 2012, 7:31 pm

Firstly lets stop trying to bribe prima donnas with the captaincy because it's getting embarrassing.

I've always favoured a CDM as captain because they can cover and help defence and push the midfield forward, Keane and Viera were imo two of the best captains ever.

Problem we have is Song is a quiet soul, so my vote goes to either Vermaelen or Arteta.

Now we can see how special players like Adams, Gerrard and the like are.

They may have had their heads turned but at the end of the day they stayed loyal to their clubs. Almost unheard of now.

Give it to Squillaci...hopefully he'll **** off within a year too!!

Vermaelen signed a new four-year deal last season so he should bring some stability despite his tendency to get injured. Arteta for VC.

£230,000 a week changed Rooney's mind not Ferguson.

denilson, bendtner, chamakh, or vela. Since the armband has a tradition now of seeing the wearer play an excellent season before leaving, I figure it would be a good way to get a solid season out of one of them before shipping them off.

but in all seriousness, I'd say vermaelen with arteta as vice captain. Both are stable and in general, not bad people or players.

Vermaelen captain, Sagna vice captain.

kalleTheMan (Trusted Member) on July 4th, 2012, 7:47 pm

Arteta is by far the best captain material at this club, but he just been here
one season lol.

TV and Song are not certain starters for me (if we sign M'vila as expected), otherwise they would be obvious choices.
User avatar

fabo (Forum Member) on July 4th, 2012, 7:57 pm

Please not Alex Song. God no.

Vermaelen possibly but you'd prefer someone who was a nailed on starter and delivering on the field, he still has to get back to that level. Maybe this would give him a boost.

Jack obviously a no for now as we won't be seeing him on the pitch anytime soon.

Bit of a mess really.

Can't see anyone other than Verms, or maybe Szcz.

Jerome's theory is worth the gamble imo.

yuvken (Trusted Member) on July 4th, 2012, 8:28 pm

I'd actually give it to Jack, as I think we need to go back to people who are Arsenal from birth.

But realistically, it has to be Verms.

I'd hand it to Arteta, but Verms will probably get it.

Fergie never changed Rooneys mind about anything though. Rooney just wanted the most money he could get and eventually Fergie backed down and gave it to him.

Do you not remember when Gerrard had agreed a deal with Chelsea but pulled out at the last minute due to threats to his family in Liverpool?
