Chu Young Park

Arsenal Football Club can confirm they have agreed to sign striker Chu Young Park from AS Monaco.

The 26-year-old South Korea captain scored 25 times in 91 appearances for the French club during three seasons in Ligue 1.

The one-time Asian Young Footballer of the Year made his debut for the South Korea senior side at just 19, and played in both the 2006 and 2010 World Cups. He replaced the retired Ji Sung Park as captain of the national team earlier this year.

Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger said: “We are delighted to have signed Chu. He will add true quality to our attacking forces and will be a valuable addition to the squad.”

Chu Young Park said: "I am very honoured and I feel very happy to be at Arsenal. It is a dream to be here and I am really proud to be an Arsenal player. Now I just want to show how good I am and prove myself.

"In my opinion this is a great club, now I have to show what I can do on the pitch. I will do my best, I will never give up, I will show heart, I will give everything and I hope [the fans] will support me."

The deal is subject to the completion of formal registration processes.

Chu Young Park will wear the No 9 shirt at Arsenal. The striker prefers to be known as 'Ju' and will therefore have J. Y. Park as his shirt name.

A goal on average every 3.6 games...is he really what we need?

Obviously though welcome on board and I wish you every success in a gunners shirt.

edit:- that is over the last 3 seasons in comparisson Van Persie has averaged a goal every 1.8 game over 3 seasons and Walcott has averaged a goal every 6.6 games (not including goals this season)

Same here. But I'll give him till next season before I judge him.

Hopefully he shows his best form here and becomes a good option for us upfront.

Good luck as he's going to need it with the No.9 shirt!!!

he'll be a good back up since he can play all across the front line. i wouldnt expect too much from him as an RVP replacement. let's keep our expectations in check.

Welcome to Arsenal!!

Heard mixed reviews about this guy, hopefully he can help us to fight for titles again.

The striker prefers to be known as 'Ju'. Pronounced like 'jew'?

Also i read that he needs to leave by 2013 to go and do two years service in the army.

Might as well get behind the guy. He's here now.

Does anyone really know what's going on with his military service? I've heard he's going to have to do it at this rate but i've also heard he's exempt with most of the South Korea squad. Thought that would be the case since he was their captain?

Welcome to the club! I know nothing about the guy, so I can only trust Wenger's judgement on this one. We'll see.

I read that was why he didn't cost much. He won't be here very long.

I think in short time many will be pleasantly surprised with what Park will bring to the Emirates. He's definitely an upgrade on Bendtner and Chamakh as backup for RVP, which sure doesn't say much by itself, but he's technically apt, decent in the air and has good sense around the box. He'll work well with Gervinho and Wilshere when filling in for RVP and would be good in tandem with RVP playing 2 up top as well, a change in formation that I think should be seriously considered now, given all the changes in the squad.

We're really tapping into the asian market now aren't we ?

His record is nothing to get excited about, but we need attacking players. He'll add depth, hopefully he'll improve like Adebayor did when he came from Monaco.

We need more players, good start though.

As of now, I think Park will have to go in 2 or 3 years time. There are members of the national team who have exemptions due to performances in tournaments. Park is not one of these players. There's always the possiblity of him being allowed to defer, but for now I wouldn't count on it. He should only be expected to contribute for 2-3 years, which is fine since Arsenal really need to focus more on the short term (like this year and next) than they previously have shown to do. While the longer term individual projects are still important, there's a dire need to address the squad as it stands now. With the defensive signings + Park, things seem to be headed in the right direction. And now for a midfielder....

He'll play this year and next year and then go back to SK after 12/13 for military service. You can't avoid service in SK.

Well it looks like every south corean must pass a 2 years military service before they turn 30.

Welcome to the club J.Y.Park.
