Chu Young Park

KAB (Forum Member) on May 23rd, 2012, 6:33 am

"L'Equipe have also reported first (though the news here is disseminated through another agency) that Arsenal must pay AS Monaco €3 million in supplement after striker Chu-Young Park, signed last summer from the Principality side for €3.5 million, does not have to complete his mandatory South Korean military service until 2022.

A clause had been written into the agreement last summer to that effect. It had been believed Park would have to begin serving his sentence as early as 2013."

you think Asians would just buy any Asian players' shirts?

It's typical ignorance. The real money is in Arsenal credit cards. Besides, this is Asia we're talking about. Most people buy counterfeit shirts.

1% of Arsenal fans who dont buy counterfeit Arsenal shirt in Asia could be big as all Europe together. Not to mention huge demand for Arsenal TV coverage.

Such a shame he's leaving. He's been such a valuable asset all season.

I think this is what pissed Arsène off resulting in him not playing.

But those 1% won't be wearing Park's shirt, that's for sure.

I heard this recently but didn't pay attention, however now i'm starting to feel a bit sorry for this guy :(

Last week i heard he didn't show up to national team training, and has been getting a lot of stick in Korea for delaying his military duty.

Jamie Sanderson ‏@YoungGunsBlog
Chu-Young disappeared after end of season and was only found recently. Not in a good place. He's asked Arsenal if he leave.

Not exactly. He was dropped from the national team.

March: gets a 10-year deferral (to age 37), there's public criticism, he releases a statement through his reps saying that he'll report to duty before his 35th birthday

May: there's still criticism, Park has said nothing publicly since March. KFA tells him in order to be called-up to the national team he must give a press conference addressing the military issues; Park refuses and wouldn't answer any subsequent calls from the manager, so he gets dropped from the NT.

Park "disappeared" for about 2 weeks, and resurfaced a couple days ago. He gave an interview to his alma mater's newspaper saying that he's already addressed the military issue and there's nothing more to say.

I'd renounce my citizenship to any country with mandatory military service. I'd be in political asylum camp in 10 seconds if that were the case, so I agree with him for not wanting to give interviews about that crap. I would have said "fvck your military you have to rely on the US for protection anyway so cut the nationalist charade".

Honestly his military and national situation is of no concern to me, or nothing to feel sorry for him about, i'm sure he'll still have a financially comfortable life no matter what.

What's annoying is the pointlessness of this buy, what a waste of 2 million plus.

Is there any accountability for those at AFC involved in his transfer?

Probably not....

Try 5 million. There was a bonus if he could get out of military service.

He lied about it to Afc when they bought him. Which is why I think he never got a sniff of football with us anymore. Wenger got pissed.

If that's true then he deserves to be frozen out, however, the club (Wenger, Law whoever was involved) must accept responsibility for a lack of due dilligence in this transfer. It seemed pointless from the beginning from even a football sense that he had the track record and quality required anyway, not to mention it may have strined the relationship with Lille (as a future/continued talent supply source) who were in advanced negotions iirc...

Not a good thought. Get yourself together Park.

technically i wouldn't say there's anything wrong with the guy, certainly doesn't warrant the bench - especially behind chamakh. the most logical footballing explanation would be that he was a victim of RVP's form and the lack of technical quality throughout the rest of the team. RVP was virtually ever present and they weren't very compatible on the RVP centered set-up of the team. when we had cesc and nasri last season, we had some flexibility in terms of carrying some players.

The story goes that the contract with Monaco included an extra 3m payout if Park's military service was deferred past 2013. What Arsenal didn't know, and Park and Monaco forgot to mention, was that Park had received his 10-year Monaco residency the day before signing with Arsenal (thus deferring his miltary service and triggering the payout.)

libero31 (Lobby Member) on June 13th, 2012, 4:46 pm

During today's press conference, a reporter asked about Arsenal and whether he would leave. He replied that he couldn't say anything specific about a transfer. All he said was that you can't foresee how the circumstances or the contract can change, so the most he can do is try your best.
