Messi is out of this world

Oh I'm sorry, you're right. Messi can't be stopped, we're doomed.

Shall we even bother showing up in 10 days time?

Imagine if Silvestre plays in either game...LOL

Championship players make a mug of him. If Messi gets at him, he will soil himself...

Messi will be a threat, of course, but I have faith in Gael. He's in great form. Messi isn't their only threat anyway. Giving him special attention would just make things easier for Iniesta, Xavi and the rest. Gael's got this, guys.

That's a terrifying prospect.

But then again so was Cygan at left back against Ronaldo at highbury a few years ago, but he ended up handling him as well as any fullback ever has. Big games in this game, and in the cl in particular aren't usually decided by who has the better players, but rather just by who outperforms who on that one day.

Thats the kind of attitude my old man would be proud to hear from a gooner (one of those doom & gloom "ive been a fan longer then you and have seen such & such speeches)

Bah, screw messi, i bet the Barca fans are crapping themselves at what Cesc is going to do to them 8))

this seems really sad...

He is simply amazing. Best player in the world right now.

That said, no one can play great every single game and we are a lot more capable of handling him than anyone else he's come up against lately. Clichy has the pace to keep up and evem if he does lose Clichy he's going to be running straight into Vermaelen.

He'll be a massive threat but so will Cesc to them.

Nice. A jinx thread.

Now, where's our 'Barca: The CL Invincibles' thread?

Are FIFA and their regulations aware of this?

Lol. For the record, I don't think he's fully human either. A mutant perhaps. Some of the stuff he pulls off are simply unbelievable. Even Alan and co. spoke about him in one episode of the UFGN podcast. When he's on his game, he's virtually unstoppable.

At least the British press have stopped hyping Rooney so much and tipping him for WPOTY after every header/tap in/ penalty converted- even they can see that Messi is on a much higher level. He's simply the most gifted footballer I've seen since El Phenomeno.

Seconded. But Clichy's the most gifted defender I've seen since Maldini, so we've got nothing to worry about.

Messi is so good it's unfair.

Humble Rex (Forum Member) on March 22nd, 2010, 1:15 pm

Messi is 23 years old going on 24. To use his record against English teams is a bit unfair if you want a more complete picture since most of those games were played when he was just a kid.

In recent times only Chelsea have been able to stop him I think. I don´t think we are capable to play like Chelsea did last year. I don´t think Arsené has any intention of trying either.

It will probably be two games that are quite open, and attacking players will be given pretty much space. I don´t think that particular approach is a very good one against this player on the form he is in.

Hopefully he will not be on this form when we line up, because for me at least he IS unstoppable to US right now the way we play. We always leave our fullbacks in one on one situations on numerous occasions, and we always give opponents opportunities to run at our defence with the ball. Those are axactly the kind of situations that plays to his strenghts.

I think we have a quite good chance to beat Barcelona. They are great, but so are we. I do think we need to be extra cautious of Messi though and have a plan to contain him. He is good enough to beat us on his own right now, like he just has with Valencia and Zaragoza.

Time for him to do his hammy again me thinks. Would make me feel a lot better going into this tie.

Just for the sake of correctness, Messi won't be 23 until the end of June.

ibby is correct, grow a pair

AFCG7 (Elite Member) on March 22nd, 2010, 3:41 pm

Clichy can stop him i think, as long as he does not get a clear run on our LB we should be ok.
We just need to stop him getting the ball , that means closing them down as quickly as possible , and when we get the ball keep it for as long as we can.

sammy89 wrote:If there is a defender in the world who can take Messi mano a mano, it's Sagna. Clichy might need some help, but Vermaelen, Nasri and Diaby will have his back

Sagna was all over the place when he faced Messi in the past. I think Clichy will be best suited to dealing with him. BTW, it's not the Messi on the flanks that we need to worry about, it's the Messi in the hole. Song, Campbell and Vermaelen are a very good defensive triumvirate but two of them are relatively immobile, which would be absolutely ideal for the Argentine.
