room for Ciani on that coaster oft?

GoonerGurjit (Elite Member) on January 3rd, 2011, 10:08 pm

I think Mertesacker is exactly what our defence needs: a leader with experience at the very highest level. The guy has a winner's mentality. I know he's not the quickest, but he more then makes up for that with his great positional sense.

Oh, and yes to mertesacker as he's a very good defensive organiser... Then again, he is German so hardly surprising.

the Battle of Berlin was some really poor German defensive organization. The USSR crushed their offsides trap

Yeah, but the kids were left in charge of Mother Germany.:D

GoonerGurjit. He's built like Crouch, though. As in, he is easy to out-muscle, despite his height.

Dead in the water:

"We are in a difficult moment with Werder and we should not be talking about me at this time,... I am needed here for our day-to-day work and it is my duty to concentrate on that. I cannot deal with anything else... Like I say, most of it does not even get through to me and I have told my agent that he should leave me in peace. In certain situations, players should protect themselves by not losing track of the most important things in their job."

that doesnt mean anything.. if Werder is willing to sell him, he would certainly listen to offers

Agree with US - I don't think this is likely, but Per is doing just what he should, i.e. not come across to his supporters like he's a rat looking to jump ship.

Think I had put Phil Jones' name in the wishlist thread but as far as an immediate impact goes Mertesaker will be much better for us than Phil Jones would. We need a CB that can step into the starting 11 and a player like Phil Jones wouldn't be able to do that (if he was fit anyways). We need a strong, established CB so I think we should bring in Mertesaker if we get the chance. There comes a point when you have to stop looking at the future and focus on the present.

I wish Wenger would sometimes have the same attitude

Jones is out for the next 4 months

In other words, Phil Jones really couldn't make an immediate impact.

thegame24 (Forum Member) on January 17th, 2011, 7:45 pm

If he was fit though he would be good enough plus counts as a home grown player for us.

A fit Phil Jones would indeed have been a good signing around now, cover for both CB and DM. Looks a very good prospect.

ricky1985 (Elite Member) on January 17th, 2011, 9:03 pm

Jones does look like he has something special about him. The talk is we offered £10M for him in the summer, a well connected local journalist claims it as fact, he also says the new Indian owners are keen to do a deal for Jones in the summer to fund other purchases. I reckon we could be back in for him.

Good prospect yep

so too nzonzi

squallkid (Forum Member) on January 17th, 2011, 11:15 pm

I would take Jones right now even if he is injured instead of waiting until the summer to buy him even though he couldn't contribute in any way shape or form to our season.

ricky1985 (Elite Member) on January 17th, 2011, 11:18 pm

The thing with Jones is he looks like that type of defender we've all been craving. Not now, obviously, he's still a kid, but in another 2 or 3 years, you wouldn't be shocked if he was leading a Premier League defence somewhere.
User avatar

squallkid (Forum Member) on January 17th, 2011, 11:22 pm

We need to snap him up before Man Utd and Chelsea come calling, Chelsea will be looking for the "new John Terry" in the coming years and Utd are always on the look out for a new bargain.

But, the problem is that if we get a good central defender now, like we should, we won't need a new central defender for a long time, especially with Bartley emerging.

How, exactly, is it a problem?
User avatar

Iloveyouarsenewenger (Forum Member) on January 18th, 2011, 3:01 pm

It is a problem with Squalkid's master-plan of keeping Jones away from the clutches of Man U and Chelsea.

I see....but then we won't care because we're sorted at CB
