No doubt it would be a cheap fee though, all important issue for the club.

Something is wrong behind the scenes if this is true of course, especially when we've been looking at PL Defenders all summer.

@gunnerblog
Can confirm validity of L'Equipe Mertesacker story. Not done yet but should be by end of the day.

I wouldn't complain if this were true.

Oh dear me. He was pretty much our favourite defender in the past few seasons to join us, but in recent years hes been so poor.
One can just hope he improves when he comes here, and another positive is that he is very tall and commanding in the air

If we signed Mertesacker AND Cahill I'd be quite delighted with our options at CB. It'd certainly completely freeze out Squillaci and Djourou!

Perhaps he's coming in as back-up for Koscielny?

Dream on son, there is zero chance of that happening now. We're stuck with Mert and Juju at least for another two years. Don't know why I even bothered getting excited over Cahill after our initial “derisory” offer. This is Wenger's Arsenal ffs.

Perhaps a change in our defensive line?
Which makes sense if we're not looking to play a possession based game.

Tall, experienced, no-nonsense centre-back? Could do a whole lot worse in my opinion. Would have preferred Cahill too but the Twitter-saga probably ended our negotiations.

This would suit Koscielnys game even more and make Mertesacker a sensible signing. Lets hope so.

I thought high line was Kos' forte, not the other way around? How would deep line be better for Kos?

Stiff, slow, immobile, inconsitent are the adjectives that come into my mind long before

Sounds like we've bought him because he's cheap rather than him actually being the best defender available. Spurs will now probably get Cahill, great.
God I hate this club sometimes

It's not like we had 50 million in the bank, is it, guys? We can't afford better players. Oh wait...

Disciplined CB with good concentration who can read the game. He is good a timing his tackles not playing offside traps and chasing strikers. The hgih line left him 1 on 1 all to often even though he is good in 1 on 1 situations.

How about Koscielny goes to the bench where he belongs and we buy a quality CB?
This slow-ass punk Mertesacker will get raped in the Premiership I think.

Mertesacker isn't the answer to our problems. Why can't we just pay the extra couple of million for Cahill? It's stupid just like how we could of signed Alonso if we payed 2 more million.

So much hate for Per. And when did Cahill become the second coming anyway?
I'd happily take either.

lol when did Cahill become gods gift to defending. His positional awareness is Djourou like.
Every big club in England been scouting Cahill for ages but noone want to spend big. He's so overrrated around here.
