We're linked with Martin to replace Cesc.

-French international.
-On the small side.
-Creative.

Tenuous links elsewhere too. Thoughts?

An automatic no from me.

I wiki'd him, saw that he was a young, short, skinny midfielder from France.

No , definitely not..he's too young and inexprienced - he will need at least a year and a half to acclimatise.

None of those things matter Raider, except that he's French. New generation has shown no respect to this club.

He has 17 assists and 4 goals last year according to wiki. I haven't watched him play but that is pretty good stat..

Lets at least get the big, warrior come leaders in first?

solidify the back and middle of the pitch, then worry about the elegent, quick paced players.

That way, when the attacking side of the game doesn't quite work out during a match, we have the defenders there to ensure we don't suffer a loss.

I want the bullying leaders first and foremost. Big Gary Cahill.

It's a weird one. Good player but a little too early for us to pay good money for him now, BUT, if he has another good season or two then all the big boys will come on the scene and we would be left with no chance of signing him.

I knew we'd be linked with Martin, ever since he scored on his debut for France.
He does have some good stats, but i can't say i've seen enough of him to judge whether he's good enough for us or not.

arsenallegends (Forum Member) on August 14th, 2011, 7:23 pm

Its all equally important. Fabregas and Nasri have left a hole as vital to fill as the one Toure/Gallas and Flamini/Denilson have left.

Just havent seen enough of this guy, but his assists stat from last year is eye-catching.

patrick42uk (Elite Member) on August 14th, 2011, 7:59 pm

Hmmm- seems a genuine playmaker. Links the play, can play a killer pass and good set-piece delivery. Clearly these are qualities we are losing with Cesc going and could do with replacing. Incidentally, he's been described as the French Xavi

Don't need him. We've got the English Xavi and the Welsh Iniesta

I agree. He'd be a good signing if we were losing one of Cesc/Nasri but not both. We'll need to get someone more proven but I suspect it will be him or Jadson

Some footage of Martin

He's a classy footballer. Great technique, and the potential to be one of the best in the world. We already have Wilshere and Ramsey though. What we need is steel and experience. Something only Jadson and Lucho can provide for us.

patrick42uk (Elite Member) on August 14th, 2011, 8:47 pm

Wilshere is a different type of player though and Ramsay even more so.

I'm concerned at the lack of a genuine playmaker and none of the names you mention above are that

oh please, as if being french is what does it. A certain Ashley cole comes to mind...

Martin is an exciting young player to watch, and it would be nice to have him here...but he seriously lacks experience. Not what we need right now.

Cesc is a Frenchmen?

arsenallegends (Forum Member) on August 15th, 2011, 1:28 am

Referring french exports Adebayor, Flamini, Nasri, Diarra, Gallas and sorry if I caused offense.

Martin is class, he can play in the mid or on the wing as the wide playmaker and the guy just knows how to pick the final ball. He's at a good age and i would have him over jadson anyday.

When push comes to shove AW will go with what he knows best & that he trusts = Clairefontaine graduates.

It would also be an opportunity to stick 2 fingers up at his detractors & re assert that he will do it HIS way.

Having said that I have no issues with signing the likes of Martin or Ayew or anyone else for that matter, provided they are bought to address an issue and to fit a role & balance within the team as a whole.

What I don't want is square pegs being developed to provide flexibility because they are cheap & can do a job in that role as well as others. No more AMC's being played on the flanks etc.

outlaw_member (Forum Member) on August 15th, 2011, 2:10 pm

I haven't seen Marvelous Marvin Martin play, but it'd be interesting if he is actually a very good final third passer. French playmakers have tended to love their feet too much for them to be really creative.

Who the **** are all these players we are being linked to..? Can we go back to being linked to star players even if we don't bid on them? :(

How does he compare to Gourcuff?
User avatar

kel varnsen (Trusted Member) on August 15th, 2011, 2:38 pm

not sure about this guy. sounds like an inferior version of fabregas.

i don't think we should look for a direct replacement for fabregas. i would prefer someone more quicker and more mobile, but also less "creative". someone like ozil, mata, kagawa etc. players who can burst through the lines both on and off the ball.

Agreed Kel. Cesc leaving is the perfect opportunity to change a formula that wasn't working, and move towards more direct, incisive attacking play.
