USL Soccer league and Canadian soccer discussion

Sounds like a nice Hargreaves goal, I'll see if I can find it.

I'm pretty sure Sven will bring him to Germany, though the press here don't seem to talk about him at all compared to guys like Carrick, Jenas, etc.

Of course...
He wasn't born in England and he doesn't play in England. Why in the world would they waste words on him?

That sucks. I'm lucky as I'll most likely be living in Ottawa by then so I can watch matches there, travel to Montreal, or even Toronto if need be. I guess you haven't got that option in Winnipeg.

By the way I heard they finally tore down the old Winnipeg Jets arena!

Haha, they did tear it down. About a month or so I believe. Maybe a bit less. Ahh I have so many memories there (like dropping the puck at a game). But that's a bit off topic.

Yeah, I don't really have an option of travelling to near by cities to watch. I might see if my dad wants to go travel to Toronto that summer to watch some games. I have family around Toronto, so I could use that as another reason to go.

I guess the trip to Edmonton for a Footy match is a bit too much eh?

Hopefully we'll still be living in this area and I can catch a couple matches in Burnaby at Swangard Stadium. Heck maybe I'll even take a weekend trip to the Island and go to Victoria as well.

Edmonton wouldnt be too bad actually. Calgary would probably be better as I have a cousin living there now. I think I'll wait to see what teams are playing where and I'll decide accordingly. If there are any young gunners in the tournament (which I'm sure there will be), I'd be tempted to watch them play.

Toronto is probably to most likely for me though. I've just got more family out there and it would make the most sense for my family. Even though it is further (I think?)

I would love to visit Vancouver again when we move back...so nice out there. Lucky bugger.

I found a good article on Pat Onstad which you can read here

Unfortunately (and suprisingly...) Calgary is not listed as one of the host cities.
Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Edmonton, Burnaby, and Victoria.

Jeff Agoos finally retired eh. That names been around for awhile.
Cheers for digging up that article Koivu.

koivu (Trusted Member) on April 13th, 2006, 11:57 pm

Yes, Agoos has been around for ages hasn't he.

I've also read:

- the new Toronto MLS team will wear red and white
- Toronto will be one of the host cities for the 2009 Gold Cup
- Ottawa's Frank Clair Stadium is getting new higher grade 2-star turf at a cost of $440,000. I can't wait to play on that as that is where the indoor league is run during the winter months.

I guess they're going the Raptors route and trying to be 'Canada's team'. I'm not sure if they will appeal to people in Montreal or Vancouver who may soon have their own MLS side anyway.

you can vote for the name of Toronto's new MLS team here...

https://www.torontoprosoccer.com

They've got some pretty bad ones to choose from, but they do have an "other" category that you choose and type your own name in.

Canuck (Global Moderator) on April 21st, 2006, 5:18 am

Finally, a chance to get my message to somebody important.

Actually I'm fine with any of those names except Inter Toronto...
User avatar

Canadian Gooner (Lobby Member) on April 21st, 2006, 7:30 am

tbh the only one I think is reasonable on that list is "Toronto FC"...which wouldn't be bad. But I kind of like "Sporting Toronto" like someone had mentioned here before.

For me it would be between these 3 in no particular order:
Toronto FC
Toronto Athletic
Sporting Toronto

FC could be added to the end of any of those really.

SCF (Lobby Member) on April 21st, 2006, 1:32 pm

I've suggested Toronto Wanderers.

Canuck (Global Moderator) on April 21st, 2006, 6:15 pm

Toronto Northmen apparently has some historic significane. There was Toronto Northmen team in the shortlived World Football League (1974-75) though that was Chuckball, and not proper football so I think the connection is tenuous.

Still, it's better than the Toronto Reds...
User avatar

koivu (Trusted Member) on April 21st, 2006, 9:08 pm

I would say Toronto Athletic ahead of Toronto FC

Do you think TSN, Sportsnet, CBC or Score will even broadcast Toronto soccer?

Toronto is a hockey town...Next in the pecking order are the Raptors, then the Jays. There are the odd lacrosse games and curling games but lacrosse is very close to hockey anyways.

A few things...

The USL season has now kicked off, here are this week's results for the Canadian teams:

Virginia Beach Mariners 2-0 Toronto Lynx
Vancouver Whitecaps 1-0 Portland Timbers
Miami FC 0-0 Montreal Impact

The Vancouver match was a sellout, 5,722 fans in all at Swanguard Stadium.

Vancouver hosts Toronto next weekend, while Montreal visit the Puerto Rico Islanders.

=================

Julian de Guzman was sent off for Deportivo as they drew 1-1 away to Cadiz. Julian received two bookable offences.

As for his brother Jonathan, his Feyenoord side lost at home to Ajax 4-2, losing their playoff semi-final 7-2 on aggregate.

Speaking of the de Guzman's, I've found THIS article.

Looking less and less likely that he suits up for Canada, though at least for our sake he was not included in Holland's 33-man squad for Germany.

Canada holds mini-camp in Florida

Nice to see Tony Menezes back in the fold now that he's signed with the Toronto Lynx. Lots of youngsters involved, a good group and hopefully they can do us proud in the future.

Also, does anyone remember Garrett Kusch? Big bald striker, intimidating...He is now the team massage therapist! Check the bottom of the article.

Here are this week's USL results:

Puerto Rico Islanders 0-1 Montreal Impact
Vancouver Whitecaps 2-0 Toronto Lynx

Taken from canadakicks.com:

Last night’s match between the Whitecaps and the Lynx was the first game played towards the Voyagers Cup. The Voyagers Cup is awarded each season by the Voyagers – Canada’s national soccer fan club. The Cup is awarded to the best Canadian team playing in the USL First Division based on points earned in matches between all three Canadian clubs.

The first Voyageurs Cup match is followed by a two-month break before the
next one in early July. The complete 2006 schedule is as follows (home team
listed first):

April 29 - Vancouver vs. Toronto
July 5 - Toronto vs. Vancouver
July 7 - Montreal vs. Vancouver
July 16 - Vancouver vs. Montreal
August 23 - Toronto vs. Montreal
September 8 - Montreal vs. Toronto

All four Voyageurs Cup competitions so far have been won by Montreal, with
Toronto finishing as runners-up in the first three and Vancouver doing so in
the fourth.

The schedule, results, standings and more are provided at voyageurscup.ca.
