When was the last time you enjoyed a transfer window?

Quicker than Walcott (Forum Member) on August 28th, 2012, 1:47 pm

How could any Arsenal fan not revel in sheer delight at Sol's move to next door?!

All the summers you mentioned were great (although I was not around for '83, and '95 I wasn't a follower yet).

2006 was a good one: Rosicky, Baptista and Gallas.

Kanu joined in January '99, mate.

For me nothing will beat the summers of 95 (Bergkamp and Platt) and 1983 (Charlie Nicholas), but its easy to forget we had some great summers in the Wenger/Dein era as well.

97 was lovely. Overmars was one of the most exciting players in Europe. Arsène and Dein topped it off with a nice Christmas present called Kanu in January 98.

99 with Suker and Henry and 2000 with Euro 2000 final match winners Pires and Wiltord were also summers that filled you with confidence.

A lot of people will nominate 2001 and Sol Campbell. Even though he was a colossal player, something put me off a player who would move from Spurs to Arsenal. The RvP move to United could be seen as divine retribution. Still a great moment, underlining the enormous gap that had developed between the clubs.

I can't recall a summer since the early 2000s that has been remotely enjoyable though.

RVP's treachery is our payback for Sol. Karma's a bltch.

Quicker than Walcott (Forum Member) on August 28th, 2012, 1:56 pm

Cole went to the Blue Scum, so we're one down at the moment. At least that means Karma is due to work FOR us next.

We have lost Thierry Henry to Barcelona, Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona, Samir Nasri to City, Ashley Cole to Chelsea, Robin Van Persie to Manchester United, Mathieu Flamini to AC Milan, Gael Clichy to Manchester City, Aleksander Hleb to Barcelona, Emmanuel Adebayor to Manchester City, Patrick Vieira to Juventus, Kolo Toure to Manchester City, and Alex Song to Barcelona.

How the hell can you say that Karma is against us? Hell, we should be loaded with positive karma after all the **** us fans have been through.

For me a move to Chelsea is no worse than to City, Liverpool or abroad. Its the way he went about it that hurt. It was a **** deal as well. 5 million and Mr Sulky Gallas for a player of Cashley's quality was disappointing. Especially when you consider the amounts of cash Abramovich was chucking around at the time.

Another summer I enjoyed was Klinsmann walking out on Spurs after 10 months. Hilarious.

Cashley, Kolo,Song,Flamini
Hleb,Vieira,Cesc
Henry RvP
Adebayor

That would be a good team were it not for the fact the only keeper we have lost in recent years is Almunia

Signing the likes of Pires and Henry wasn't any more exciting than signing someone like Gervinho at the time. Obviously they both ended up being far better than Gervinho but they didn't arrive here as bigger names. They became bigger names at Arsenal. Especially considering in the summer of 2000 we signed Pires to replace Overmars, most people were a bit upset at the time as we'd lost Petit as well. To Barcelona no less.

This summer was probably one of the most exciting until we sold Song. The Jan window where we signed Theo, Adebayor and Diaby was exciting too.

Our transfer windows have never been that exciting under Wenger. We rarely sign big name start and we never spend megabucks.

Maybe you weren't excited by signing world cup winner Thierry Henry from Juventus or World Cup golden boot winner Davor Suker from Real Madrid, but many people were. Yes, it was obvious Suker was past his best and that Henry (club record signing at the time I believe) had not yet fulfilled his potential, but they were certainly positive moves.

Overmars and Kanu were not big names? There were question marks about both their fitness levels following injury and illness, but they were two of the top names in the mid 90s Ajax side that ranks as one of the most exciting teams of the modern era.

When OM captain Pires set up French golden boot winner and Arsenal record signing for the winner at Euro 2000 I think even the most parochial Gooner knew who they were.

I don't think anyone was in any way upset when Gervinho signed. Unfortunately it was against a backdrop of negative events surrounding the club.

Agree with you that the Bergkamp/Platt window was a one off in terms of the outright spectacular, and that even the early Wenger windows weren't of the kind that would excite Real Madrid fans, but they were consistently confidence inspiring. You saw players coming in that you felt would strengthen the team.

The only positive for me about the last few summers is that we now no longer appear to have the kind of players who will trigger endless months of speculation.

yes, agreed but what i mean is that sol joined a rival on a free. when it comes to all the players and clubs you listed i dont consider any of them direct rivals and in most cases we were handsomely paid. had we invested that money we would've been delighted to lose them.
in the case of rvp we got paid too little and lost him to a direct rival. hence the sol comparison.

If I remember rightly we not only went back on a proposed contract offer with Cole, but once he felt we'd ****** him over (we had!) he then wanted out to win trophies. Seems to be a running theme there regarding AFC.

Also, Gallas was seen as a very good defender at the time, with many TV and radio analysts stating we got the better of the deal. How true that is is open to interpretation, but I don't feel it was an awful deal as Gallas was a top defender when he arrived here.

In fairness to Cashley, I think he would get less abuse if it happened now. Back then we all took his claim that Arsenal had tried to screw him over as a personal slight. Most of us would be more inclined to at least give him the benefit of the doubt now.

He would have signed for those extra 5k a week.

ashley is a two timing snake. even had he signed he would have screwed us over later on. we were never going to satisfy his ego.

January 2004 when we bought Reyes was exciting to me.

July 2012. We brought in Podolski and Giroud and Podolski rumours were rife towards the end of the month.

The one that got me pumped up the most was when Sol switched his home to us.

F*cking electric.

Arshavin was pretty exciting in an awful period for Arsenal.

TakeChillPill (Forum Member) on August 28th, 2012, 4:07 pm

Arshavin was legendary, the thread in the Lobby was epic, the forum went in to melt down...

I remember when he said I'am Gooner

in terms of excitement, it was the first time we were signing a World Class player in his prime since DB10.

tap-in (Forum Member) on August 28th, 2012, 4:12 pm

In some way or another I enjoy every summer window. This one has been exciting because we started shopping early for a change and bought in some quality. Ok it then went a bit flat when we lost RVP and Sahin went to Pool but I do think we have some excitement to come in the next 4 days, hopefully that includes people eg Bendtner leaving.

His first 6 months were pretty good to be fair, somewhat similar to Arshavin. Everyone in Europe wanted him at the time, even Zidane said it seemed he was riding an invisible motorbike :D

I remember being very excited when he joined, unfortunately Zidane wasn't the one who taught him to ride the invisible motorbike :)

Until about a month ago I was loving this window.

José Antonio Reyes got me excited more than anybody else because I watched him destroy Real Madrid single handedly earlier in the season before he joined us and I was bouncing off the walls with genuine excitement.

Same, well, up until Sahin deal fell through. Who knows, may be Wenger will pull something out of a hat in the coming days.

Did you really love this transfer window up to the Sahin transfer?

Losing the world's 3rd most on-form player, who is the best striker in the world right now (if we don't count Messi and Ronaldo strikers, up for debate, but not the point anyways), losing our key midfielder of last season in Song.

Cazorla is a big player, but not the Cesc category and shows that we have been regressing every single season. We got 35m for Cesc, we should have splashed it all out on a Hazard quality player, who went for 3m less if I'm not wrong. Yes his wages are pretty tight, but sell Bendtner and you are 52k/week closer to his wishes.

The thread about supporter expectations tells it all, to be honest.

Expected to lose RvP and was more upset at where he went. Would only feel better about the team if we replace Song with same quality but with more discipline. Thought Sahin was it....when that fell through, my positive outlook went down with it.

The window we signed Reyes for me as well, was really exited about that one. Didn't turn out that great in the end but I thought reyes did a lot of good things for us, and we didn't lose that much money on him in the end. Especially remember his brace vs chelski in the FA cup and the 7-0 trashing of everton.

It's been a lot of depressing windows after that though, especially the summmer windows. Our transfer policy has sucked the recent years.

I liked this transfer window but again, we are one top player away from something great

Revolution (Forum Member) on August 28th, 2012, 8:17 pm

I haven't enjoyed any.

1999 was awful with the Anelka saga, and since then, you had Vieira whoring himself out at every opportunity.
