A proper Match thread for this one should be done even though I am well aware of The Emirates Cup Thread by member Kraig in Arsenal Talk. - That thread can be used for the other Non-Arsenal games such as Inter Vs. Valencia, Valencia vs PSG etc.

A few Facts on .......The Emirates Cup.............

.............Image...................

* The Emirates Cup is a two-day pre-season football tournament, to be held on July 28 and July 29, 2007 at Emirates Stadium in London, England. The tournament is similar in style to the Amsterdam Tournament held by AFC Ajax, and is hosted by Premier League side Arsenal.

* The sterling silver cup was made by Thomas Fattorini, whose family has produced trophies for English football since 1827."We wanted to create a design that both stood out from other international football trophies and something that a club would be proud to place in their cabinet," said Fattorini. "Emirates Stadium has very iconic, asymmetrical flowing lines across the rooftop, which motivated identical lines in the original brand identity for the stadium. The base, lip and handles of the trophy mirror these, with the Emirates logo placed firmly on the face of the cup."

Ten Facts on Paris Saint-Germain Courtesy of Arsenal.com

* Paris Saint Germain have had a turbulent history, and were formed after several unions and mergers involving Paris FC, F.C. Paris, Stade Saint-germanois, Saint-Germain-en-Laye and Stade Saint-Germain. The club as we know them today were formed in August 1970.

* Our only previous meetings with Paris Saint-Germain came in the two-legged 1994 European Cup Winners Cup Semi-Final. In the first leg at the Parc des Princes Ian Wright opened the scoring for Arsenal before David Ginola grabbed an equaliser for PSG. The match finished 1-1. In the second leg back at Highbury Kevin Campbell scored the only goal to take us through to the Final.

* Arsenal have taken part in a European Final at the home of Paris Saint-Germain. The 1995 European Cup Winners Cup final took place at the Parc des Princes. Spanish opponents Real Zaragoza broke Arsenal hearts with a last minute winner in a 2-1 victory.

* Paris Saint-Germain have won the French league on two occasions, in 1986 and 1994. They have also won the Coupe de France (French Cup) seven times, most recently in 2006.

* In November 1996 Arsène Wenger bought Nicolas Anelka from Paris Saint-Germain. Anelka had played just 10 times for the French team (scoring one goal) before moving to London. Anelka went on to win both the Premier League and FA Cup in 1998, scoring the second goal in Arsenal's 2-0 win over Newcastle United in that season's FA Cup final. He also won the PFA Young Player of the Year in the 1998-99 season. Anelka played a total of 89 games for Arsenal, scring 27 goals.

* The golden era for Paris St-Germain came between 1993-98 with a team containing the likes of Bernard Lama, Alain Roche, Ricardo Gomes, Valdo, David Ginola, George Weah, Raí and Youri Djorkaeff.

* Paris Saint-Germain won the European Cup Winners Cup in 1996. Bruno N'Gotty scored the only goal as PSG beat Rapid Vienna 1-0 in the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels.

* Paris Saint-Germain also reached the The European Cup Winners Cup final the following year, but were beaten 1-0 by Barcelona in Rotterdam.

* In 2001 Paris Saint-Germain lifted the UEFA Intertoto Cup. That year they qualified for the UEFA Cup along with Aston Villa and Troyes AC.

* Paris Saint-Germain finished their 2006-07 season in a disappointing 15th place. The club struggled mid-season winning just two games in an 18 game sequence.

After the defeat at the end of our tour in Austria the other day, the result was quite disappointing. And the most disappointing part of that game is that we were repeating the same mistakes we had last season. Had expected a win from that game, the same way we had when we were up against PSV Last season in the Champions League Campaign. However, Salzburg deserved some credit aswell. and the fact that we barely create chances on that game could very well be the cause of our defeat.

Arsène has tried placing Eboue on the Right Wing, clearly his performance there was abysmal. Hleb however, placed in the Left impressed me. And he should play there for the game to determine whether or not he should stay there. After all we have been breaking backs to find a Left Winger. Eduardo missed a few chances, but showed pretty much potential. It is after all just a friendly game. Clearly without Fabregas, our play making skills near to a zilch.

I hope the lads can shake off the defeat and focus on this game. Albeit it's a Pre-season Friendly, but a Trophy is a Trophy nonetheless.

Predicted Line-up

------------------Lehmann-------------------

---Sagna----Toure---Gallas---Clichy---

---Walcott---Fabregas---Diaby---Hleb---

--------------v.Persie--Eduardo-------------

A mix of the first teamers I reckon for this one. And I fully expect Fabregas to start here. With Eboue had a few knocks in the last game, and Rosicky out injured, I'd expect Walcott to start aswell.

Should be a good game to watch definitely.

If Cesc starts the game, the pass distribution will be much better. Denilson tried that against Salzburg but his forward long passes didn't find teammates as accurate as Cesc. The team have become very reliant on Cesc but that's the reality.

I don't see us pitching our stronger team in this one.

I have a feeling it will be a strong team we put out, especially since it really does matter, and there's a cup. After losing 1-0 last time, Wenger is going to want to get some confidence in and go and win the game. I don't think Wenger would geel too good about putting out some squad players and losing in front of 60,000 people at the emirates stadium.
Hleb on the left would be interesting, I think that should be given another try.

2 games in two days will probably mean very different teams for each.

Sunday is the showcase event, against Milan, so I would have thought the better side will be playing in that match - it'll be interesting to see whether Wenger mixes it up, or he plays his 'B' team one day, and 'A' team the other.

Lehmann
Gallas (c) :(
Djourou
Sagna
Traore
Walcott
Song
Diaby
Randall
Bendtner
VP

Almunia
Toure (c) (meh...)
Senderos
Hoyte
Clichy
Eboue
Denilson
Cesc
Hleb
Adebayor
Eduardo

two different line-ups there, and we have Fabianksi that could come on for both games, and Barazite & Gilbert. so 2 games in 2 days should be fine.

i don't know but i think you need to score at least one goal to win a game.

or did you mean away goals or some other form of goals ie aggregates without home-away preferences.

He meant the Amsterdam tournament way of getting points.. Every goal counts as a point.

The first cup must be for Arsenal so no experiments anymore Arsène Wenger :x I want to see the strongest line-up.

Endris (Forum Member) on July 27th, 2007, 5:43 pm

I persume Wenger will play two mixed teams or even more likely, a weaker side for the first match and pretty much the full first team on Sunday. I hope to see both Toure and Gallas so they can work on their communitcation and I would prefer Almunia and Lehmann playing as they will do they main work this season. I am not too excited about Fabianski's performances so far. I also hope we will see Eduardo getting one or two goals.

No no no. The line-up will most likely be something like:

--------------------Almunia------------------

Sagna--Senderos--Djourou--Traore

Walcott---Diaby---Randall----Rosicky

-------------Bendtner--Adebayor---------

Maybe Le Boss plans to make a couple of substitutions later on if needed, but not give more than 20 minutes those who will play against Inter.

Remember Nadz, that we play Inter Milan the following day, so we won't go with our first XI just yet. Also, Traore will probably start, as he was a PSG fan while in Paris, and has talked about his "burning desire to play against PSG".

One thing for sure is that we will have two different teams playing.
Adebayor and Walcott will probably play tomorrow for sure.
Fab and Rosicky will play on Sunday.

As for the team selection as we know it will be a full strength on sunday than saturday. IF no injuries will might see a few subs playing on both days.

I hope we win both and show some devastating football as goals play a big part.

I hope this will help answer your question, mate:

Arsenal.com wrote:Three points are awarded for a win, with one for a draw. However, each team will also receive one point for every goal it scores during the tournament.

Edit: Courtesy of Long Time Gooner, Thank you mate. :)

Arsenal.com wrote:Goal difference will be the deciding factor if two teams finish level on points— and if they still can’t be split, then the number of goals scored will come into play. The trophy will be shared if the teams still have identical records.

Emirates Cup - Competition rules & regulations

Coming back to the match, I'd love to see Eduardo scores (if he indeed plays at some point of the game); it will do a world of good to his confidence and that will definitely lead to a very good performance in the regular season. He didn't let me down when it comes to the possibility of him being isolated from the play as I initially feared before I saw him played live the other day; as a matter of fact, the young Bendtner didn't either. We have a real quality group of strikers here and I simply can't stop smiling about it. :)

However, as much as they can look so good on the field with all the linkup plays and whatnot, it all comes down to how efficient they can be in front of the goal. I reckon that all 4 of them are a bit rusty at the moment which is something fairly typical prior to the start of the season; what they need is confidence and there is no better way of gaining that than banging in a few against a good opposition.

RVP have already scored so, this time, I hope Eduardo will finally open an account of his own at the Emirates. ;)

Edit#2: News update

Arsenal.com wrote:"At the moment, not everybody's match fit," said Arsène Wenger at Friday's press conference. "We worked very hard in Austria and there was such heat that we have lost Emmanuel Adebayor, Tomas Rosicky and Theo Walcott for the tournament.

"The good news is that it is a question of days not weeks. They will be OK for Ajax and everybody will be ready for the start of the season."

Hi Lancelot. Your answer is a bit misleading there. You have omitted a bit. Teams get a point for a draw, three points for a win just like regular league, BUT they also get a point for each goal scored. Cheers mate

Question: There are four teams, why not every team vs. every team? it would mean 2 matches more..!

=> where is the problem?

kind a stupid imo!

dublingunner (Forum Member) on July 27th, 2007, 6:43 pm

6 substitutions allowed in each match so I reckon Wenger will use all those substitutions and a good few players will get some time in both matches.

It's important to win by 2+ goals if at all possible tomorrow so we go into the 2nd day leading. Inter v Valencia will probably be a tight enough match so we need to take advantage of playing a relatively weak team. Really can't wait, first match of the season with a bit of pressure on the result.

I think we could see Fabregas for probably the second half tomorrow and the whole of the Inter match. RvP and Ade could start together since they didn't pay as much as Eduardo against Salzburg.

EDIT: Ok just read about those Ade missing the weekend. RvP and Bendtner to start tomorrow.

Any PSG players we can look at to stand out? I'll be checking for Christian Rodriguez if he plays..he had an excellent Coap America with Uruguay.

Grampus_Eight (Trusted Member) on July 27th, 2007, 9:06 pm

Not expecting much out of this tournament.

Is Cesc available?

We only have three strikers available for the tournament: RvP, Bendtner and Eduardo.

And we have only one established wide midfielder: Hleb. Eboue is also available though.

This is madness. We are obviously at least one, probably two wide midfielders short.

Very disappointing to have missed out on Guardado and di Maria - not to mention the likes of Ribery, Malouda and Simao.

Another season of Diaby, Flamini and Denilson playing out wide...?

With the way that the squads are shaping up for this 'tournament' I'm glad that I decided not to bother with tickets for this, but to settle for the armchair tv viewing. I don't think that this is going to be great value for money.

How? It's some of the best teams playing against each other, what better than to watch it live in front of you.

I heard Cesc wont play due to his Knee injury but he will surely start against Inter.
