France manager Didier Deschamps has backed Olivier Giroud to fight back from a ‘rough patch’, stating that he has confidence in the Arsenal striker.

Giroud has endured a difficult month after being booed off the field during the last international break, whilst at club level he was sent off in Arsenal’s defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League.

The former Montpellier man eased the pressure on him with a goal in the 5-2 victory over Leicester City but now plays second-fiddle to Theo Walcott and at national level he faces a lot of competition for a forward spot.

However, quoted by The Daily Mail, Deschamps is confident Giroud can rekindle his form in front of goal.

‘This is a difficult period for him. His playing time is less important, his confidence has diminished and he recently had a match with us where he could have shown himself to perform better,’

‘But that is part of a season, the fact that he is here means that I have confidence in him. He cannot lose his abilities overnight.’

Giroud is amongst the squad for France’s friendlies against Armenia and Denmark during the international break but his playing time may be limited, with Les Bleus boasting the attacking talents of Karim Benzema, Antoine Griezmann and Alexandre Lacazette, amongst others.

He’s not been good for us so he deserves to be benched. In fact, if we had a good striker all these years he would be on the bench for 3 years now. Glad Theo seems to have stepped up!
