The boss has recently offered his view on Frank Lampard’s suspicious move to Man City, questioning whether or not the move was premeditated prior. Lampard signed for MLS’s new expansion side New York City FC but was sent on loan to parent club City until 2015, but is now reportedly considering extending his loan spell, and Wenger believes the move may raise some eyebrows across the board.

“You always have two judgements, one is moral and one is legal and it just depends what you consider,” said Wenger.

“I think ‘is it legal?’ You have to respect it after that and the player has to deal with his decisions. I respect the fact he wants to play at the top level and he maybe didn’t have that opportunity any more at Chelsea.”

“I don’t really know (what) is behind all that . Was it always his plan to go to New York and go to Man City? I am not sure.”

“I genuinely think he wanted to go abroad and to New York, and (then) suddenly was offered this solution to come back to the Premier League and he took it. He could explain that much better than I do, I don’t know what is behind that.”

I agree with Wenger’s assertion, regarding Lampard’s original intention to go to New York, and I don’t believe Lampard is dishonest or sneaky in any manner. It seem to me that he was given a chance to return to top level play and surely he cannot be faulted for that. It is widely reported that he favoured a stay at Chelsea but was farmed out of the club, so it is not his fault that he finds himself in the situation he is in now. He is a top class professional who can still contribute at the top level so who are we to point the finger? (Can’t believe I am saying this about an ex Chelsea player!)

The question remains as to whether Lampard made any promises to New York City FC as well as anyone else that would prohibit him from extending his stay at City. Only he knows the answer to that and I expect him to make the right decision in that regard. If not, he should be free from any scrutiny. Reports of Man City using this transfer as a loophole around financial fair play is well off base I think (although I wouldn’t put it past them) and they just happened to benefit from a fortunate situation.

Oh and by the way I do note your article apears on the back of Lampard scoring 4 goals in a week, sour grapes comes to mind,City just have more influence than Arsenal and soon they will have more money, self generated I might add so the FFP that your manager so positively called for could well be the thing that destroys them, as MCFC will just become stronger whilst the also rans become poorer Man Utd never envisaged not qualifying for the Champions Lge but look what’s happened!

Hmmmm, so Thierry Henry loan from NY Red Bulls is OK, but Lampard playing for City to stay in peak condition (at his advanced age) before starting the season in March is not? OK, got it!

Chelsea were not interested in either paying him what he wanted or playing him as much as he wanted, so he moved on after giving them the prime years of his career. City have given him the ability to extend it by a few months, yet The Voyeur is acting like it is some kind of immoral conspiracy? Seems a tad strange, considering it has been so open and above board, but then Wenger has to divert attention away from Arsenal’s usual dire start to life…..even after spending the big money this season! A little sad, tbh.

When I saw the headline I naturally thought you was referring to Terry Henry going back to Arsenal from NY.

As a longtime City season ticket older I love City but I dont agree with the way we have gone about some things lately and ‘LOANING’ Lampard is one of them. Because we were given sanctions for breaking FFP rules the club has bent to breaking several rules. Like bescause we are lucky enough to be a rich club a fine no mater how much doesnt affect us so why not break them every year. We had transfer restrictions imposed but we got around that by ‘LOANING’ a top player from another club owned by our owner. A player whose morals are lacking that pledged himself to NYFC but Im wondering IF our plan all along was for this situation. And I just wonder if he will be with us for the season? Its bending the rules and IMHO morally wrong.
And dont get me started at the way our players seem to have turned into the neighbourhood bully. I dont mind a strong player but we kick, pull, push any chance we get. The way Yaya treated Hazard in the player tunnel last week was bordering on GHB.
City arent the team Ive loved since a young lad nowadays. Winning by any means isnt right and I believe in everyone having an even playing field. We are a rich club and are able to afford any players we want and we shoudnt to be doing what we are.

      I smell a rag.

And to your point about it being “immoral.” How is taking a player (who signed for NYCFC on a free transfer!!!) on loan and paying his entire wages “immoral?” There’s nothing even remotely immoral about it. nor is it illegal to do this as Whinger is implying.

In fact, MCFC is giving Frank a great chance to be fit and in form when he does eventually turn up for NYCFC. That, my friend, is good for Frank, good for City Football Group, and most importantly…good for the MLS. Or maybe you all just want to see NYCFC and the MLS fail…I don’t know. But the truth is, you have ZERO say in it all so I suggest you just get on with your lives and enjoy watching top players play week in, week out in the best league in the world. Sports are never “fair.” FFP won’t make it so. to believe otherwise is akin to sticking your head in the sand.

Dearie me, you want us to believe you’re a blue? No chance you are. It’s come to something when opposition fans are impersonating city fans just to have a dig, get a life

I wont dignify these 2 comments but to say I travel to both home and away games even tho Ive moved miles away from home and supoported City since I was born with my dad being mates with our old legend Neil Young. And I soddin hate rags.
We cant look at ourselves through rose tinted glasses. We need to stand back and take a look at ourselves and try to fix some of the problems we have and not just paper over the cracks.
No I dont think its right that we have got Lampard on a free loan – and we all know hes not going to NYCFC this season dont we. Tell me how we would take it if say Chelski owned some US franchise and say had Messdi/Ronaldo etc. They had broken the fair play rules like we have so was unable to use their money to buy more than the 60 mill euros they were allowed (unless like us they put pressure on and were allowed to spend more) So Chelski said well we are going to borrow Messi and Ronaldo for the season from another club our owner has. And says to the rest of the football world ‘You dont mind do you guys?’
I often wonder what would the EPL be like if Ossie Ardiles and Ricky Villa hadnt transfered over.
Its great to win but sometimes the price we pay is too high and not in money.

Nice to see an honest City fan, it used to be a hallmark of City fans, but with the new wealth comes the plastic chavs that Chelsea and your neighbours up the road are famous for.

Reading the comment about city and ffp etc problem you have is arsenal will eventually trump you both, there’s much more money in london higher prices are generally accepted, even now we make most price per unit and regularly run our of available match tickets. Man united have fallen they will have a tough season to finish top 4 in my opinion. They are to weak at back with their best 4 if they don’t get champs league next season they will have major team and financial issues, personally I hope this is the case
