Francis Coquelin made waves throughout the football world with his performances over the second half of the season. After presumably being recalled early from loan to make up numbers, he stunned everyone with his combative and robust displays in the centre of the park.

Suddenly, it seemed Arsenal had found the defensive midfielder they have been crying out for and for far less money too. Wenger recently hailed the performances of Coquelin this year, saying he has surprised everyone.

“He [Coquelin] is the most unexpected player who has made it from January onwards,” Wenger said.

“I don’t think I exaggerate if I say that he convinced everybody. He has played a huge part and contributed very well.”

Still, Arsenal are continually linked with big money moves for established holding midfielders with the names Schneiderlin and Carvalho continually thrown around. Wenger said Coquelin has earned his place in the squad no matter what, but will he keep his place in the XI?

A place in the squad and a place in the XI are two different entities, has Coquelin done enough to keep his place in the side? You would be inclined to say he has, and to replace him would be harsh. He has been brilliant since his insertion and deserves some credit for Arsenal’s improved form and defensive stability.

Finding someone to do the job he does is easier said than done regardless, and unless Wenger can snag a world beater in defensive midfield, I suspect Coquelin will still be the main man. The 4-2-3-1 formation technically allows for another ball winner to play alongside Coquelin should Wenger desire, but with Cazorla stepping into that role and Wilshere waiting in the wings, I’m not sure the boss plans on deploying two defensive midfielders.

The boss will have to make a decision on which defence minded midfielder to play, and Francis has just about done enough to deserve the nod. What do you think gooners? Does Coquelin deserve to keep his place in the side?

He has earned a chance to keep to his place. Hopefully he can keep up the level he has been at!

Definitely YES Francis has done a lot to deserve his place in arsenal XI but the question should be “should he get injury or get card” on a big and must win game what do we do for instance return leg to barcelona “camp nue ” arsenal was playing without VP, Song, sagna and other two big names if we had another song on bench and another sagna and another Van p like maybe Arsenal would have qualified. So maybe we have to act and act fast in 2 positions we don’t have replacement that is holding mid-field and striker. With due respect Boss Wenger You have to lead us to that part that make us feel like the pride of London we ARE. Thank You all and thanks to the BOSS.

I think Francis has done enough to hold his place. Both Rambo and the Ox can temporarily fill in his position. What Arsenal needs is a a central defender of the class of Hummels of Borrossa Dormond, a first class striker plus Cech in goal.
