The Mirror ran a story last night that Manchester City are now targeting Swansea City striker Wilfried Bony in the January transfer market.

No real surprise there, after all, Sergio Aguero is sidelined for potentially two months, whilst Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic continue to have spells themselves in and out of the treatment room.

Upon reading the story, though, I couldn’t help but feel a little, well – for want of a better word – gutted that Arsenal don’t seem to be making any noises around the Ivory Coast international striker.

We were linked maybe twelve months or so ago, along with Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, with the 26-year-old and, before Danny Welbeck’s arrival from Manchester United, there was still a lot of clamour for Arsene Wenger to bring the former Vitesse Arnhem striker to the Emirates.

Perhaps there was a hesitancy from Le Professeur that Bony would fall foul to the ol’ ‘second season’ syndrome and, in fairness, that is perfectly logical reasoning – just look at the likes of Benni McCarthy, Roque Santa Cruz and Papiss Cisse to name just three of the previous ‘strikers of the moment’ we’ve all called for Wenger to sign.

Anyway, Bony’s form so far this campaign proves he won’t be going down as a ‘flash in the pan’ and, therefore, I’d welcome Arsenal to make a move for the Swansea City striker.

I wouldn’t be suggesting this due to our need for defensive reinforcements; however, transfer rumours suggest that Arsene is perhaps – as always – looking for more options in that final third.

Bony would be the perfect option, for me anyway, as he offers everything that we don’t have – and sometimes, despite Arsene’s beliefs, you need to go against the norm.

Bony doesn’t particularly have the work ethic of say a Welbeck, Sanchez or a Giroud, however, that tireless running often means our main men aren’t actually in the box where they are paid to do their business – you could almost guarantee Bony would be ready and waiting in and around 20/25-yards from goal all the time.

Bony also has this Lukas Podolski-esque ability to rifle the ball, on a more regular basis, into the back of the net. Our German international – before Alexis Sanchez rocked up – was our only genuine ‘something from nothing’ matchwinner and there’s no doubting we need some more of those, as things stagnate all too regularly in Arsenal’s play.

Swansea, often described as a poor man’s Arsenal (yeah, yeah, I know they beat us) due to their similar style of play so there’s no case worrying about whether Bony can adapt to the Arsenal way of things.

Sure, the player who thinks it is acceptable to have his first name on the back of his shirt (yes, I’m looking at you, too, Alexis Sanchez) signed a new deal with the Welsh club recently – in fact, and I may be wrong here, but I felt his celebration yesterday was signifying that he is – or thinks he is – staying at the Liberty Stadium. But loyalty in football doesn’t exist.

Make a move, Arsene.
