Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown believes centre back Shkodran Mustafi has a long way to go to match the performances of his partner Laurent Koscielny.

The German international was caught out for Thiago’s first goal in the Champions League match against Bayern Munich last week, and taking part in a Q&A for the Daily Mail website, Keown said that there is a room for improvement for the £35million signing:

“Mustafi got caught out against Bayern Munich. There’s no shame in being caught out, but it’s fine lines that takes you from good to great. Koscielny has proven he is a top talent – he just needs the trophies.”

Arsenal only have the sixth best defensive record in the Premier League this season. They have conceded 28 goals in 25 games, with Chelsea, Tottenham, Manchester United, Everton and Middlesbrough all having conceded fewer goals.

Their failings have been highlighted in two high profile games in recent weeks with the five conceded away from home against Bayern being preceded by another three goals being shipped against Chelsea in the Premier League.

At 24, Mustafi has time on his side to become a better player as Keown points out, and it will be hoped that with Koscielny’s help, the German can become a consistent performer for the Gunners.
