Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher says Arsenal are three major signings away from challenging for major honours, and went as far to reveal exactly which players Wenger should sign. In his column in the Daily Mail, he warned Wenger not to be “fooled” by his side’s current run of form and urged him to enter the transfer market.

Carragher made some interests points regarding Arsenal’s strong current form and set of players but says Wenger cannot afford to be complacent this summer, and must go for jugular when the window opens. According to Carragher, Arsenal should look at Chelsea as an example, as Mourinho invested heavily in the likes of Costa and Fabregas to push them over the line after coming close last season.

He had this to say: “Ospina has played 12 Premier League games; Arsenal have won 11 and he has kept six clean sheets but Wenger still needs to buy a new No 1 if they are to be title challengers. Petr Cech would be an ideal candidate to come in.”

He continued, offering his opinion on a midfield and defense duo who he believes would push Arsenal over the line.

“Why doesn’t he go for Paul Pogba, who looks set to leave Juventus? Wenger spent £42m on Mesut Ozil, so why not spend the same and more on Pogba” he said.

“If they needed to sign Ozil two years ago, their need to sign Pogba this summer is even greater. Diego Godin of Atletico Madrid is 29 and at the peak of his powers. He would be ideal at the heart of the defence.”

As for the forward lines, the former Liverpool stalwart said Wenger has enough in the attacking positions.

“Giroud is one of a number of good options Wenger has up front. Alexis Sanchez has been brilliant, while Danny Welbeck has played his part, but that should not stop Wenger looking to improve on what he has got” he said.

Interesting Carragher would add his name to the “Cech to Arsenal” train. As for Pogba and Godin, gooners can only dream. What a side we would have then! I agree with Carragher that Wenger should not take his foot off the pedal this summer if Arsenal are to genuinely challenge next season. A good run of form can easily be misconstrued as a title ready side, but investment is still needed.

I’m not sure Wenger is prepared to spend the kind of money it would take to bring all three of these players Carragher has mentioned, but it will be interesting to see what unfolds in the summer. What do you think gooners? Has Carragher got a point?
