Last night’s EFL Cup win over Jaap Stam’s Reading side was a special one for Gunners youngster, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, as he got his first start at The Emirates under his belt.

The 19-year-old started alongside Mohamed Elneny in a much changed XI at The Emirates last night as two goals from Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain sent Wenger’s side through to the quarter finals.

Speaking to the club’s media team, the debutant said:

“I really enjoyed myself out there tonight. It was good to play at the Emirates in front of 60,000 people and showing the club what I can do.”

The midfielder, who also featured in the 4-0 win over Nottingham Forest in the previous round, impressed fans and his manager, and was in a buoyant mood after his showing, despite not being able to add to Chamberlain’s goals.

“Everyone wants to score, so I tried a few times in the first half. I wasn’t too far off with some of them, some of them were a bit wayward,” he added.

Having made his home bow, the England youth international now has his sights set on a more regular spot, “I’m just full of confidence right now an I’m trying to push on to cement a first team place.”
