So, how do we all feel about the rumours linking us with Manchester United’s Chris Smalling?

The links have resurfaced following reports way back in the summer that suggested Arsene Wenger was looking to bring either Smalling or his Man United team-mate Phil Jones to the Emirates – two players Le Professeur fought to sign prior to their respective moves to the Red Devils.

If you look at the simple facts of the rumour then I actually think it’s all pretty promising; an England international, for £12million, a former Premier League winner and a signing from a direct rival.

I know Smalling is something of a ‘banter’ player, although I’m not so sure why(?) – perhaps one of our Man United ‘friends’ can enlighten us on his true capabilities?

For me, it seems like the logical Arsenal signing and the type of player Arsene Wenger was always going to look to bring in; he knows we need more defensive reinforcements due to lack of numbers, Per Mertesacker’s lack of suitability to face all opponents and Laurent Koscielny is fast approaching the big number 30.

Smalling, someone who knows the league, for a reasonable fee, has experience at top levels of club football and best years still ahead of him makes perfect sense, no?

Wenger should sign Smalling. This would give the squad a great depth

I don’t think Wenger will be that keen to add numbers to our defense. We have Per, Kos, Gabriel and don’t forget Chambers. If we buy a defender, it’ll be someone of true class. An upgrade on our current starters. And by that I mean an upgrade on Mertesacker. Getting a top player in to replace him seems like a logical move. However, Wenger always has faith in his current players so I don’t see him buying a defender unless Per is unhappy and wants to leave or he makes a complete fool of himself in the remainder of this season.
