As the signing of Gabriel Paulista edges closer – in fact, it may well have aready been completed whilst I write this or whilst you’re reading it – reports have emerged today that Arsene Wenger decided to go for the Villarreal centre-back over Dynamo Kyiv’s Aleksandar Dragovic.

It appears now that Louis van Gaal is looking to bag the former FC Basel man for Manchester United after missing out on Paulista, with the Red Devils’ defensive woes making ours not look too shabby.

Whether all this is true or not, you can’t help but feel a little smug about the whole scenario with the once mighty Manchester United having to pick up Arsenal’s ‘leftovers’ in the transfer market.

Yes, I’m fully braced for the abuse in the comments section but as long as Arsene Wenger proves he made the right decision in Gabriel Paulista over Aleksandar Dragovic, I won’t mind the abuse one bit.

You cannot predict a players potential for a particular manager or a teams style. Fabregas under-performed at Arsenal and even in Spain but look at his performances this year. Santi Cazorla could easily have been sold at the end of last year (with many Arsenal supporters cheering on) but look at him recently – the gunners best player.
De Geah looked very dodgy on arrival at Man United but presently he is responsible for their position in the premiership because he helped them win games that on possession and form they deserved to loose.
Dragovic is big and robust and may end up as dominant as the Serb Vidic that kept United defence solid by his strong presence. Only time will tell – Transfer costs are often perceptions of relative worth – Tell that to Bradford City, Cambridge and very nearly Brighton. There is no huge gulf in talent between players in the first two or three tiers in the English FA leagues.

Does anyone really know anything about Gabriel Paulista? He only emerged as a starter for Villareal last season. He’s done well this year according to reports, but has anyone seen him play?
The ‘experts’ say he’s fast and skilled, but defending in Spain is nothing like defending in England.

In Arsene we Trust, of course. He’s a good record lately. The players signed in the last few windows, Ozil haters not withstanding, have been quality. I thought he was right on the money with all of the summer signings. Arsenal are now two deep across the back line when healthy, with Jenkinson back from loan next season, depth won’t be an issue.
