Nacho Monreal is not looking for excuses. The Spaniard admits that while Arsenal’s current injury struggles aren’t ideal, his focus is already on Wednesday’s clash with Anderlecht.

“The Champions League is THE competition for club teams” he said. “Injuries are a handicap to us but if we do want to go through we are going to need everyone playing at the top of their game.”

“We will not use injuries as an excuse. The squad is 24 or 25 players and the rest of the squad has to come in and maintain our level. We won’t use it as an excuse.”

He also spoke about his new position stating he is happy to put in a shift for the team.

“I haven’t played much as a central defender, I’m naturally more of a left-back, but if the manager wants me to play there, I would do my best.”

“Injuries affect all teams but we have had some bad luck. Many of our important players are out and that obviously has an impact.”

I like Monreal’s attitude and agree that Arsenal should have more than enough strength in depth to come through this period. Let’s hope the rest of the squad follows this train of thought. He did well at centre back yesterday as did Bellerin at right back and I think the quality is there. I was very impressed with Campbell’s cameo as well (you probably already knew that) and I think the strength is their.

Ramsey has returned now, while Walcott, Arteta, and Gnabry (Diaby?) are also close so that will add a boost as well. Campbell did well and should see more opportunities  as should Podolski and Rosicky both of whom I’m sure will want to impress. I would also like to see the likes of Hayden and Ajayi get some chances as they are more natural centre backs than Monreal.

The hope is that our supporting cast can at least get us to January, although I trust them to more than hold their own for much longer than that.
