Schumacher: Lehmann will be Germany's number one

By Jonathan Chong on Tuesday, April 4, 2006

West Germany's goalkeeping star from the 1982 and 1986 World Cups, Toni Schumacher reckons that Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann will be Germany's goalkeeper for the 2006 World Cup.

"I cannot see any reason not to choose Oliver Kahn but I get the impression that Jens Lehmann will be the one playing at the World Cup," Schumacher said on Monday in an interview with internet portal Sport 1.

Lehmann has been in astounding form for Arsenal this season and is looking like the favourite to be in goal for Germany.

"Jens was so calm and relaxed when interviewed after Arsenal's recent Champions League game with Juventus. I sensed then that he already knows he will be the number one.

"Competition is good but if Kahn thought he was certain of being the number one he surely would not have played against Cologne carrying an injury."
