Lehmann on leaving Arsenal / how he saved Argentina penalties

By Jonathan Chong on Monday, October 9, 2006

Jens Lehmann has indicated that should he leave Arsenal, he would be taking a step down.

The German number 1 also said that he would never join another club in England, and that if he were to leave, he would return to Germany.

Lehmann said: "Playing for any other team would be a step backwards compared to the Arsenal team I'm in at the moment.

"Other clubs may be more successful, but I don't know any that play more attractive football.

"I would like to spend another year here, but I also know that Arsenal wouldn't hesitate to sign any other goalkeeper that they thought better than me.

"The Bundesliga is still of interest to me.

"When my wife Conny and I returned to England after the World Cup we both said that it would be nice to go back to Germany.

"The grounds and the atmosphere there are great, but I'm not prepared to make any statements on specific clubs."

Lehmann is also set to auction off a crumpled piece of paper that contained the details of Argentina's penalty takers, based on his own research.

The paper, after translation, reads:

1. Riquelme left high
2. Crespo long run/right, short run/left
3. Heinze left low
4. Ayala long wait, long run right
5. Messi left
6. Aimar long wait left
7. Rodriguez left

Why is there always so much talk of Jens leaving/being replaced? The man is performing at his peak and isnt showing signs of decline - surely he's good for a few more years
