About This Writer

Tony is one of those supporters who is utterly and totally committed to Arsene Wenger, having stood and sat through the Billy Wright era, and other long spells when trophies and good football were just a dream. "If you just watched that one season under Rioch," says Tony, "you'll know that having the players is only part of the deal. We had Wright, Bergkamp and the famous back five, but it was still poor stuff, and we only qualified for the UEFA Cup on the last day of the season. Wenger took the same team and transformed it into a double winning side."

Now past the age of 60 Tony is no longer quite so active in the singing, shouting and chanting department, but he's still as active as possible. "Of course the Ems is a wonderful stadium, but if you want the fun of football you have to go to the away games. The chants - which I am not going to quote in print - can be extraordinarily funny, and because you only get the hard core supporters at the away matches you do a tremendous atmosphere. I wrote a piece for the sleeve notes of the Gooners DVD of the season, and selected Cardiff away as my moment of the season. It was not a good game - but the atmosphere with 5000 of us behind one goal, was magical."

Tony Attwood is a writer who lives in the Midlands who is a season ticket holder at the Ems. Tony's latest book, "Making the Arsenal" will be published in October this year. It is the story of the creation of the modern Arsenal football club in 1910, told through the diary of a columnist on the Daily Chronicle.
