Abou Diaby recently returned to action for Arsenal after missing most of 2006/07 with a horrible ankle injury, suffered in reckless challenge sustained against Sunderland last season. He has looked composed since his return, making some useful contributions in the heart of Arsenal's midfield, and is along the way justifying some fans' comparisons to Patrick Vieira.
Diaby joined Arsenal at at the start of 2006, signed by Arsène Wenger in the wake of Vieira's move to Italy. At the time, Wenger said: "I like his potential, his physical power, the fact that he can win a fight in the middle of the park. He's good going forward as well. People compare Diaby with Patrick Vieira a little bit because he has a similar stature. To model himself on Patrick would be a good idea in my opinion because he has that same kind of stature and strength."
He certainly has the opportunity to further take on the mantle of his predecessor this year - as Arsenal continue to put their faith in the younger players.
