An enigma wrapped up in a mystery tied together with a riddle. That's the only thing that can really be said about new signing Amaury Bischoff, who joins Arsenal as an almost completely unknown quantity.
In true Arsenal style, his origins are cosmopolitan - his mother is Portuguese (who he has represented at U21 level), whilst his father shares Arsène Wenger's French / Alsatian heritage.
Already 21, he has only one top-flight substitute appearance to his name, and spent the best part of the 2007/08 season injured - even Arsène Wenger must have struggled to scout him enough to know that he was worth taking a chance on.
Yet Wenger has made no secret that this signing is a gamble on what he sees as Bischoff's natural talent, and Arsenal fans will hope that this signing proves to be more Gaël Clichy than Junichi Inamoto.
Supposedly a versatile midfielder with a good technique, Bischoff will spend the first part of the season building up his fitness levels and physical ability before getting a chance to have a crack at the first team.
