After bursting onto the scene in the 2005/06 Champions League campaign, few players in the current Arsenal squad have attracted as much controversy as the pacey Ivorian. Blistering displays at right-back against the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus saw him being hailed from some quarters as among the best in the world in his position.
However he began to falter in his second season, both picking up a reputation for unsportsmanlike behaviour and showing tactical frailties in defence, which perhaps contributed to him eventually losing his place to the more consistent Bacary Sagna. A somewhat unsuccessful transition onto the right wing in 2007/08 left many fans wondering exactly what his role in the side should be, and several even more surprising selections in central midfield have suggested that he's likely to fill a utility role this term, using his versatility to contribute to the side at whatever time, and in whatever position he is called upon. He has a lot to work on this year.
