The ageing Jens Lehmann is the current undisputed number one goalkeeper for club and country - however with the signing of Lukasz Fabianski there will be some competition this season.
An outstanding series of performances in 2005/06 saw Lehmann break the record for most minutes in Champions League football without conceding and along the way, helped Arsenal to the Champions League final for the first time.
Lehmann finally displaced Oliver Kahn as German number one in the 2006 World Cup and helped his country into the semi-finals.
The big German's playing style often gets him into trouble, as he often ventures off his line, often, suicidally. As a result, Lehmann makes the occasional howler, adding a degree of unpredictability to his usual solidarity in front of goal. Most fans are happy for him to continue in goal for Arsenal, but most will be looking to younger alternatives as Lehmann inevitably heads towards the end of his career.
