When Manuel Almunia joined Arsenal in 2004, he was another relative unknown on these shores, having only really carved out the career of a journeyman for himself in Spain, being part of seven different clubs.
Few predicted that he would stick around with Arsenal for much longer than a year or two, and a number of high-profile blunders will not have helped raise him in the esteem of the fans. But, as he so often does, Arsène Wenger has stuck by his man, and since the departure of Jens Lehmann after the 2006/07 season, the man from Pamplona has made the Arsenal goalkeeping shirt his own.
Though he perhaps does not inspire as much confidence as other Arsenal goalkeepers of recent years, he has earned himself a reputation as a steady performer, who will always do what's required.
Whether or not he can grow into a match winner remains to be seen, but for the time being Arsenal can be confident that there's a man at the back who can be relied upon.
