8. Mikel Arteta

artetaSigned from Everton in the summer of 2011, costing £10m, Arsenal’s club captain has been a crucial figure in a period of transition from the Gunners.

An attacking player upon his arrival, Arteta developed into a deeper role in midfield after Alex Song’s departure to join Barcelona. That same year, 2013, Arteta became Arsenal’s vice captain behind Thomas Vermaelen and continued to be a vital player in the squad.

In 2014, Arteta became Arsenal’s captain permanently after leading the side to FA Cup success in dramatic circumstances with a 3-2 victory over Hull City. He subsequently won the Community Shield against Manchester City, before retaining both honours the next year.

Now 33, Arteta’s role within the squad is significant off the field and he maintains the Arsenal captaincy despite not featuring for the first-team often. During the 2015/16 season, it was reported he had started coaching the youth teams at Arsenal.
