On the day in 1999, Arsenal signed the man who would go on to become the club’s greatest ever goal scorer and player. Thierry Henry joined Arsenal from Juventus, following his former manager Arsene Wenger after spending just 8 months in Italy.

Typically, this would be the part that goes something along the lines of how Henry was a relatively unknown player, and how he was young and talented but otherwise unproven, and how he rose from the ashes to become a world beater.

All are true, but here at Arsenal-Mania we much prefer to remember and honour Thierry’s contributions to Arsenal. The king, the imperial, the standard to which we hold (perhaps unfairly) every forward that joins Arsenal.

This is a man who scored 226 goals for the club, overtaking Ian Wright as the club’s record holder, and helping Arsenal to the most successful period in club history. Two league titles, three FA Cups, two Community Shields, and Champions League runners up appearance in eight years means he was the ultimate talisman.

His individual accolades means he ranks among the Premier League and Europe’s legends. He was PFA player of the year twice, and FWA player of the year three times. He lead the league in scoring in four out of his eight seasons at the club, lifting the golden boot twice, and in 2006 he became the first player to score 20 or more goals in five consecutive seasons.

He was French footballer of the year four times and Ballon d’Or runner up once.

I could continue but quite frankly his extensive list of accolades would become quite a bore. I have a better idea, let’s watch him do what he did best for all those years which is of course put the ball in the net.
