Not a day goes by where a former Arsenal player isn’t having his say in the media. The latest is one-time leading goalscorer of the club Ian Wright.

Speaking to BBC Sport, the former England international said: “I feel for Sánchez, he wanted to work,”

“At one stage he was chasing them down, he looked behind him for 15 yards there was no-one.

“He was the only one closing them down. There’s a lot going on there, especially when you got to Chelsea you have got to be more together.

“It makes no difference if your manager is showing fight but your players are not. Jack [Wilshere] was up for it, but that’s not enough.”

To take the approach to Sanchez’s tireless work ethic that Wrighty has seems to continue the theme of former Gooners speaking negatively about the club.

For me, seeing Alexis Sanchez chase lost causes, run at full speed for 90 minutes and hearing the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain talk about how he has to tell the Chilean international to take it easy in training, is great to hear nothing and has nothing but positive connotations to it – basically, I’m not sure it should be used to criticise the other 10 Arsenal players out on the pitch.

Why not take the point of view that Sanchez’s incredible work ethic brings another dimension to this Arsenal side and that it may well spur some of his fellow team-mates on?

The high praise of Sanchez certainly isn’t undeserved but it continues the bizarre trait of English football fans failing to appreciate the subtle ingenuity of players like Mesut Ozil but loving the pointless work ethic of the likes of Dirk Kuyt, Jamie Mackie and Park Ji-Sung.

Obviously the trio cannot hold a candle to the Chilean international but the point remains.

Keep up the tenacity, Sanchez, it adds something to our starting XI but give me a team of Mesut Ozils any day of the week.
