Mathieu Flamini could be set to join Lukas Podolski at Galatasaray, according to reports in Turkey. The 31 year old has fallen down the pecking order at Arsenal, and could be interested in a move away from the club for first team football.

Flamini’s younger compatriot Francis Coquelin has entered the fray and made the defensive midfield positions his own, leaving the former often frozen out of the picture. Flamini made just 15 league appearances last season for Arsenal last season, and appears to be surplus to requirements at the club.

Despite an encouraging start to his second spell at Arsenal, Flamini came under fire for much of the past few seasons with his rash positioning often exposed.

He has just a year left on his current contract, and with an extension looking increasingly unlikely, Arsenal are said to be ready to cash in this summer. As Arseblog reports, Galatasaray reportedly had a €4 million bid accepted by Arsenal for the player, and the deal could be wrapped up sooner rather than later.

It is good piece of business by Arsenal for me. Coquelin’s form last year showed us what Arsenal have been missing in the defensive midfield position. His energy and robust enthusiasm is something long gone from Flamini’s game, and it is best we move the player on.

He has been a fine servant from the club in his 11 year total affiliation, and we thank and respect him for all he has done, but his better days are beyond him now. In truth, he was never meant to be a permanent solution when the boss brought him back to the club.

Arsenal have reached a point where we no longer have to bargain on temporary stop gaps (with all due respect to Flamini). We have the funds and resources to strengthen and invest in the side, and Wenger should be looking for younger and stronger options to replace Flamini.

For me, Arsenal is right to let him leave. Farewell Mathieu. What do you think gooners? Be sure to leave a comment as well as follow my new and improved twitter handle @goonergrizz for all breaking Arsenal stories.
