New Sporting manager Jorge Jesus has moved to pour cold water on reports linking midfielder William Carvalho with a move to Arsenal. Jesus swapped Benfica for rivals Sporting just this summer and is already attempting to make his presence know. He says Sporting’s core of young player is crucial to the club going forward, and that Carvalho is a big part of that.

Reports in the Express says Jesus is adamant Carvalho will be a Sporting player next season, and speaking for the first time since leaving Benfica, the manager said both Carvalho and Sporting will improve next season.

“William is a certainty. Sporting has young people who are already certainties, are not hopes or doubts. William will be enhanced if the team is also.”

“Only players value the team respond to winning titles. He’s a player with features to play more. I have no doubt that with me will play more.”

His quotes are a bit ambiguous really, and for me don’t guarantee anything. He would have very little control over any transfer should Arsenal meet the reported £25m buyout price. Should the player himself declare he wants out, Jesus would be virtually powerless.

Still, Arsenal must move quickly if they are to secure the player’s services. The 23 year old impressed greatly during the U-21 World Cup (albeit one of the senior most players), and has drawn many admirers from across Europe.
