After a blistering start to his Arsenal career, Philippe Senderos, who joined the club in 2003, is no longer first choice in Arsenal's defence.
Senderos broke into the Arsenal team at the end of the 2004/05 season, keeping Sol Campbell out of the side and prompting the England defender to leave the club for greener pastures. Senderos went on to form a formidable partnership with Kolo Touré, helping Arsenal reach the Champions League final in 2006. Following the 2007/08 season, in which he captained the Arsenal squad for the first time and scored his first Premier League goals, Senderos left the club to join AC Milan on a season-long loan. Injuries interrupted his brief Serie A experience and now, back at Arsenal, Senderos is seeking to re-establish himself in the defensive pecking-order.
His greatest asset is his innate ability to read the game, but often times he has been criticised for lacking pace and strength. While Senderos' long-term future at Arsenal might be unclear, the relatively still young and talented Swiss defender has a fresh opportunity, in the 2009/10 season, to play a valuable role in the club's fortunes.
