When will I learn? I read a transfer rumour and, try as I might, I just can’t stop myself getting carried away in the media hyperbole in believing it will materialise.

The latest transfer rumour to break my heart, and ruin Christmas, is one involving FC Basle’s Fabian Schar who is out of contract with the Swiss outfit, which has alerted a number of clubs across Europe.

Despite being only 22, Schar is recognised as one of the beautiful game’s finest defenders with a real potential to develop and grow into a fine centre-back, and silly ol’ me for thinking Arsenal would get him, hey?!

I just figured that given our defensive troubles, the ability to more or less offer the Switzerland international first-team football and Arsene Wenger’s reputation of nurturing and growing younger players, would basically make the rumoured deal a foregone conclusion.

Sadly, it appears Serie A giants Juventus have won the race for Schar, who played 210 minutes at the summer’s World Cup, with the Evening Standard reporting that the Old Lady have had promising discussions with the 22-year-old and Schar is happy with the terms offered.

Oh well, back to the transfer window drawing board, Arsene.

Arsene Wenger has always been a slow business dealer in the transfer market. With a quality defender as Fabian Schar, I see no reason why Wenger would not pick up his phone and crack a deal with him. The player is young and good both in the air and on the ground. A very fast defender that suits the hard play of premiership style of the game. I’ve said before and I will say it again, Wenger has been so fantastic for the club for eighteen solid years, time has come for him to honourable bow out. The team needs fresh ideas, fresh method of tactical input and discipline. Wenger has forgotten that he was employed and so subject to correction periodically. If the board cannot sack him, they should move him upstairs.
