Isn’t it the case that Arsene Wenger and his team really should not be complaining about poor defending, when they are the ones who failed to bolster the ranks when needed? They did not buy the players required despite it being so plainly obvious to everyone out there.

That being said, is Arsene culpable for the injuries to Mathieu Debuchy, Nacho Monreal and Laurent Koscielny? Of course not. However, what were we thinking of when shifting Carl Jenkinson out to West Ham on loan and not replacing Thomas Vermaelen? And what is Steve Bould doing? Surely the former Arsenal defender ‘door’ is where the blame should lay regarding our troubles at the back, no?

Mostly I blame the management behind Wenger for allowing him to get away with it. What does Gazidis do, really – apart from showing up occasionally and muttering executive speak, and platitudinous tosh?

If Wenger had stronger people behind him they would have pushed him to do what was needed and signed the right players. I am sure we have tried to fill the gaps (can’t really believe they are all blind and stupid) but our transfer policy has always been suspect. Now it appears woeful and we are set to languish behind the contenders again this season.

We might bring someone in during the January window but it’s too late by then and we will not catch Manchester City and Chelsea. They are relatively settled and well on their way to contesting a two-horse race.

Let’s get some strong backroom people like David Dein into support and cajole Wenger and then we’ll see things beginning to happen. Until then, it’s more of the “same old, same old.”
