Alot of gooners have been critical of Per Mertesacker lately, even calling for the the BFG to be replaced. I wouldn’t go as far to say that myself, but Per has been less than stellar lately I will admit. Today’s solid performance aside, he was at fault for Hull’s second last week and his lack of pace and mobility is really starting to be exposed.

I still rate Per and think he is a fabulous defender, but I wouldn’t be opposed to signing another centre back. Even if not necessarily to replace Per, but to challenge him and keep him on his toes. Another defender (or two) is needed regardless to add depth to the squad and I think Per would up his game with someone waiting in the wings.

I also think a strong defensive midfielder will vastly improve the defensive fortunes and take some of the burden off of Mertesacker. If a ball winner was brought in in front of Mertesacker, he would have much less recovering to do and therefore get exposed less for his lack of pace.

It is unfair to pin all of the blame on Per for Arsenal’s frailties. He needs to improve but so does the entire Arsenal side at the moment.

Per just need more defenders to keep him competitive and make him sit-up because he is really losing form at the moment.

Your comments are unnecessarily kind. Per is quite dreadful and the Arsenal defence will continue to be exposed with him at it’s heart .He is slow in pace and thought , fails to dominate in the air (amazingly for one so tall) and when did you ever see him cover round behind his fellow centre back when required. Once attackers go past him he simply stops playing rarely trying to recover his position. However, it is true that he is afforded little protection by the Arsenal midfield that demonstrates little interest in the art of defending.

Yes I know he has a hundred caps for Germany but for most of those he had one of the truly great midfielders in front of him – one Sebastian Schweinsteiger.

Its not now that he is exposed, per has been protected by kos.to me he is a two touch guy,he invites opponents by all the time pulling back,he has never bn comfortable with ball, even where necessary he can’t mark, high speed games he never present,Joachim benched him for that, its rare per to make clearance in 6 yes area,to me he kills the game plan cos I guess team mates know his weakness. Now days los rarely overlaps fearing to leave him back alon
no team in the top 4 can have him even on its bench.he is no a player to learn from.big cups with per forget

Tallest guy in our back but can’t save us in dangerous aerio balls, can’t close down an opponent in the wings incase 3 or 2 r caught in overlap positon, instead he will escort opponet I’m our 18 urea area, unlike other keepers sczn he is ever pulling out coz he knows per can’t mark n he is slow every tym los and no 6 beaten you start praying.if we want prem and champs leage, replace him with a world class no 5 u wil c.scoring after conceding
Vicevasa mentaly phsycologicall demoralize the boys
And it kills the game plan.that’s when you begin pressing ozil n co because u need a wining goal when actually u have bn leading but conced a silly goal like one at hull and
The one in champs lge on wed

There’s been a lot of criticism about arsenal’s lack of confidence and team spirit to be consistent on winning games, we fans do not possibly have power to react towards Wenger sorts of interests. The likes of Monreal, Flamini, and Mertersacker needs strong replacements if arsenal are to be drawn in line for top four finish this season not even winning a silver medal for the club. Mertersacker has got good leadership skills but not fully spirited internally to commit himself for the club, perhaps Flamini also a stressful character on the pitch, we lost most of our games because of his lack of support for the defensive compatriots.
I think it’s time Wenger wakes up and strengthen the squad if he really wants to finish in top four this season.

And while we are at it, can Wenger please consider stepping aside and allowing someone with better “everything” manage Arsenal.

Per has been used to taking his place within an expertly organised team ….. one which defends as well as it attacks. Now he is in one with priority on attack NOT defence …. and it shows over and over again.
