Arsene Wenger is up to his old tricks again; having previously stated that we came close to signing the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Yaya Toure and Cristiano Ronaldo, Le Professeur has revealed that Manchester United’s Angel di Maria could’ve been a Gooner when he was just 17.

Wenger has stated that the reason for Angel di Maria never ending up pulling on the red of Arsenal was down to work permit regulations – a problem that the Gunners may well face in their pursuit of Villarreal’s Gabriel Paulista.

Di Maria was at Rosario Central during the time Wenger wanted to sign him, however, he ended up at Benfica before rising to the top of the world stage at La Liga giants Real Madrid.

Football is full of ‘what ifs’, so you can’t help but ask yourselves whether Angel would’ve gone on to be an Arsenal legend? Would he still end up being the British record transfer fee?

Twitter has, of course, had its say on Wenger’s latest revelations:

There aren’t half some knobheads around!

These permits are required for foreigners coming into England. Nowhere else. How the F*** people can blame Wenger for not signing Messi, Di Maria etc is beyond me!! His point is that, if the permits rule was thrown out, then England would see the best young talent developed here, and the clubs HERE can then make the money on them when they are sold on!!

Italy, Spain, France etc don’t have to worry about that! So THEY get the talent, and WE have to pay through the nose for it – making the foreign clubs richer!!

It’s not bloody rocket science is it!!

    GET OFF HIS BACK FFS!!

Wenger shut up already!! you were given another opportunity to sign him same year we got ozil and the year after and you didnt!! not because of work permit issues but because as usual you dont like paying market price for quality players. and now the team that did pay the market price are ahead of us in the league when they should be no where near!! Arsene Wenger you are predictable and boring
