Arsène Wenger has played down reports in the press (also on this website!) that he is contemplating making a move for Real Madrid’s David Beckham. Whilst being an admirer of the England captain’s talents, Wenger has insisted that he has not made any plans to bring Beckham to Highbury.

Speaking to the official website, Wenger said: “Once again that was the creative side of the English press.

“I said he was a player I always liked and that he can give a final ball but that doesn’t mean I want to buy him.

Wenger iterated his commitment to his young and developing team, saying: “We have young players who develop now I still have a few out behind them who are very good. We want to give them a chance.

“We want to get the right balance between young players and experience but we are not as far as [saying] we have decided to buy Beckham.”

So Beckham is off the cards – for now!
