Arsene Wenger has continued to heap praise on his newest addition, saying Gabriel Paulista is a better centre half than David Luiz. The boss said Gabriel is the more natural defender, and contrasted his style of play to that of his countrymen.

As reported by ESPN FC, Wenger had this to say:

“Gabriel is a different style to David Luiz, who looked more as a defensive midfielder, rather than a centre-back, because of his level of concentration and his dynamic [play] going forward.”

“I think Gabriel is a typical defender.”

“David Luiz you didn’t know if he was a midfielder, as he had the potential always to play.”

“Gabriel is a more typical defender. He is a real defender, who wants to defend.”

Luiz of course came under much scrutiny during his time at Chelsea for his positioning or lack thereof. He was often guilty of being too eager to go forward, joining in the attack before getting badly exposed on the other end. Such is the argument for most Brazilian defenders in the modern day, but Wenger was quick to separate Gabriel from this billing.

Gooners will surely be hoping that is indeed the case. Paulista looks a real no nonsense defender, and seems far less reluctant to bomb forward than Luiz. He is very much different than his compatriot, and we will be hoping Paulista doesn’t follow Luiz’s path.
