Arsene Wenger says he is looking forward to Sunday’s clash with Chelsea, seeing it as a chance to lift the first trophy up for grabs in England as well as exact some much needed revenge on Chelsea.

The Community Shield showpiece is one which divides opinion, with some viewing it as a worthwhile piece of silverware and others a glorified friendly. Wenger isn’t taking it lightly and wants to use the match to lay down a marker for the rest of the season.

Arsenal have been perfect this off season winning 4 matches out of 4 to lift both the Barclays Asia Trophy and the Emirates Cup. Arsenal outscored their opponents 14 to 1 in these matches and looked to have carried over the focus and commitment shown in the latter stages of last season.

As Sunday looms, Wenger says the clash is a chance to finally pull one over on Mourinho’s men, and get our hands on silverware once more.

“I think Chelsea have beaten us at Chelsea 2-0 last year, where we felt that we gave the game away a little bit,” Wenger said in a ESPN report. “At home, we played 0-0, so it’s a third opportunity for us to beat them.”

“We have a good opportunity to show that we have improved. It’s on neutral ground, where they’ve had success and we’ve had success, so it will be very interesting.”

He added: “It’s our next game and the first trophy at stake. We will want to win the game of course.”

Despite how some feel about the Community Shield, it is for me an important fixture. Not necessarily the most meaningful piece of silverware of course, but a trophy nonetheless and a great chance to hit the ground running.

As we know, that wasn’t the case for Arsenal last season having defeated Man City in the fixture before going on to under perform in the league, but you get the sense that there is added motivation this time around.
