Arsene Wenger has been singing the praise of summer signing Gabriel Paulista lately, saying he believes in the quality of the player and asserted he will be a “revelation” come next season.

“We bought well,” Wenger said in regards to last year’s transfer business. “I believe Gabriel will be a revelation.”

“I am convinced he will be a top player and we’ll see more of him next season.”

Does this mean Gabriel will get into the XI next season? This is Wenger’s strongest hint yet. It was expected Gabriel would perhaps usurp Mertesacker in the line up upon his arrival, with the latter’s lack of pace and mobility getting exposed on several occasions.

It was reported however that Gabriel is struggling to understand English still and as such is being eased into things. I suspect Gabriel will step into the XI in due time. The glimpses we’ve seen of him so far have been promising, particularly alongside Laurent Koscielny. Both are extremely robust and aggressive in the challenge, but also intelligent in the tracking and reading of the game.

Gooners get the sense that the two of them can develop a real formidable partnership. Gabriel has everything to be a top defender. Pace, strength, intelligence, grit, he is only missing communication at the moment (through no fault of his own) and once he acquires that Arsenal could have a star on their hands.

One response to “What role will this Arsenal star play next season?”
