Lorient man and former France youth striker Gilles Sunu is another case of “what could have been” at Arsenal. A youngster with immense talent, Sunu impressed for Arsenal’s reserves but could never break into the first team. He was a part of the Arsenal side that won the youth league and F.A Cup in the 08-09 season and also scored in the final of the UEFA U-19 championship for France.

He was brought in from French academy Chateauroux in 2007 at the age of 16. His Arsenal career started off well, scoring 4 goals in his first 9 reserve outings earning him his first team debut against West Brom in the league cup in September of 2009. He started the match but was substituted for Carlos Vela after 58 minutes. He made his Champions League debut a few months later against Olympiakos coming on for Wilshere in the 76th minute.

In 2010 he was loaned to Derby County for the second half of the season where he scored once in nine appearances. His loan was cut short due to injury and he returned to Arsenal. He was loaned to current club Lorient in January of 2011 and impressed, making 9 appearances all as a substitute. He would sign permanently in August and remains with the club to this day.

He has 6 goals to his name thus far and at 23 we hope he can push on for club and country.
