Who?

I like to think my obscure Arsenal footballers during the Premier League era is up there with most Gooners – Nelson Vivas to Kaba Diawara via Tomas Danilevicius – however, when I stumbled across Olafur Ingi Skulason’s name, my mind drew a blank.

After starting his career in the capital of Iceland with Fylkir, the defensive midfielder joined Arsenal in 2001.

Career highlights

Following a loan spell back to Fylkir during his time at Arsenal, Skulason was voted the best young player in the Icelandic league during 2003. Furthermore, the midfielder also captained the Icelandic Under 21 national side.

With regards to Arsenal highlights, I suppose his one and only appearance for Arsene Wenger’s side, during the 5-1 League Cup victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers ranks highly with the now-31-year-old.

Arsenal reject! Arsenal reject!

Olafur Ingi Skulason has lived out a pretty nondescript and uneventful career since leaving the Gunners with a move to Brentford first up – he missed the first of his two seasons with the Bees due to injury.

After two years with Brentford, the former Arsenal man opted for one of the few Scadenavian teams any of us have heard of in Helsingborgs, where he stayed for three successful seasons. However, rather surprisingly he rejected a contract there and decided to join SonderjyskE for a year.

He’s currently at Zulte Waregem, where he has been since 2011.

I remember selling him a lot on an old version of championship manager.
