Who?

Latvia international Igor Stepanovs. Arsenal signed him from hometown club Skonto FC in 2000 after Tony Adams suffered an injury. He set the club back £1.35 million pounds after some impressive showings against the likes of Inter and Barcelona while playing for Skonto.

Remember now?

He unfortunately didn’t reproduce these impressive showing in the red and white of Arsenal, however he did manage to score on his debut in Arsenal’s 2-1 loss to Ipswich Town in the League Cup on November 1st. He was also in the team that lost 6-1 to United on February 25th of that season(2000-2001), and didn’t feature again in the campaign.

He came back strong in the following season (sort of), making 6 Premier League appearances in the run to the championship. He played a bit part role in the back to back FA Cup triumphs in 2002 and and 2oo3, although he was left of the match day squad for both finals. He finished with 17 total league appearances for Arsenal during his four seasons with the club.

Arsenal reject!, Arsenal reject!

Quite the nomadic path for Stepanovs after leaving Arsenal, pulling on the shirts of 7 clubs from 2004 to 2011. He joined Grasshopper in 2004, playing two seasons with the club before returning to his home country to join FK Jurmala in 2006. From there, he underwent spells in Denmark and Russia with Esbjerg and FC Shinnik Yaroslavl.

In 2009 he returned yet again to Latvia to join RFS/Olimps, but only to rejoin previous side FK Jūrmala the same time the following year. He retired in 2011 and now holds a coaching role with the Latvia U-17 national team.
