An unfamiliar face lined up on the Arsenal bench in Saturday’s win over West Brom. 20 year old shot stopper Matt Macey was the man in line to replace Damian Martinez should he have gone down, but who is the Arsenal youngster?

Macey is an agile and athletic goalkeeper. The former Bristol Rovers man received a trial in the autumn of 2013. He made an immediate impression in his first season at the club, starting 15 games for the under-21s.

He managed to hold down his spot in the XI and helped Arsenal reach the quarterfinals of the League Cup. He gained a little bit of buzz after a string of impressive displays during the winter months.

He was rewarded with a place in the first team squad which traveled to Austria during this season’s pre-season training camp and started the campaign as the second choice stopper for the second team. Quite a rise he has experienced lately thanks to injuries to Szczesny and Ospina and received his first competitive first team call up.

Of course with those two returning soon Macey’s rise will be short lived, but good for the lad anyway. He is one to look out for in the future and may be competing for Arsenal’s number one in the long run.
