According to reports in Italy, Arsenal are reportedly set to open talks with Napoli over a deal for striker Jose Callejon. The Spaniard is said to be keen on the move as well, and wants out of Naples after the departure of Rafa Benitez. Callejon joined from Real Madrid two seasons ago, and adapted well to Italy scoring 26 goals in his 68.

The player has a buyout fee of £17.9m which Arsenal are reportedly happy to meet. A report from Arsenalstation.com credits Italian publication Sport Mediaset with the original breaking details. If these reports are true, it is much more welcome news than rumours of Arsenal’s interest in Napoli defender Faouzi Ghoulam.

Arsenal should be targeting a striker instead, whether it be Callejon or someone else. While Callejon doesn’t fit the ball as the top class centre forward Arsenal need to challenge for the title, he is a decent attacker still. He has abundant pace and good finishing ability and would offer something different to Giroud with movement in behind the backline.

His goal tally speaks for itself at both Napoli and even at Madrid where he was a backup for the most part. He still managed to bang in the goals off the bench and the Madrid academy product is actually quite a decent shout.

Whether or not he is the man to take Arsenal to the next level, he is a step in the right direction compared to another defender.

Talks are alleged to be set to take place over the next coming days and it will be interesting to see how this pans out.
